Under $1,000 Steel Road Bike

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Under $1,000 Steel Road Bike

Hello

I'm looking to buy a steel road bike for under $1,000 that has decent components (pref. no Sora or Tiagra). Big goal, I'm sure, but I can only find thus far the LeMond Sarthe and the Bianchi Eros.

Thanks in advance!

you may find an old model Jamis Quest, or argue down to close to 1000, but 105-level steel for <1000 is hard to find

Are you looking for a new bike?

Reason I ask is because eBay and your local Craigslist are full of lots of recent models of used steel road bikes. I recently found a '99 Bianchi Veloce (steel and all Campy!) for under $600 on eBay. eBay will even break down the current offerings in terms of size, material and manufacturer. Give that a whirl if you don't mind used-- lotta bang for your buck to be had out there.

I don't have to buy a new, thats a good point. And yeah, C-list is a great resource. I think that and eBay will be my first attempts at finding a bike. I guess, then, the next real question :

What are some good steel bikes with 105 to Ultegra components below the $2,000 range?

Maybe I could find these bikes online for cheaper as you've suggested.

Thanks guys!

Check around for some last year Lemond Croix de Fer's. I believe they had the 105/Ultegra group and retailed for $1200 so any leftovers should be in the $950-$1000 range.

An exhaustive search of the internet shows Jensen selling the 06 for $1,030 with the Ultegra/105 mix. ok, I just put "Lemond Croix de Fer" in Google and it was the first link. I think I saw 53,55, and 57 in sizes available.

Craigslist is a great resource. I'd check out Bianchi's steel models as well.

If you're interested in building up a frame, I've got a 2003 55 cm Bianchi Veloce frame in excellent condition that I'm looking to sell. PM me if ya're interested!

Bianchi Veloce

Ditto craigslist and ebay. But keep your eyes open for a Bianchi Veloce. A fairly recent model (2004-2006) should be right in your wheelhouse. They come with full Campy Veloce components (10 spd) and campy's Vento G3 wheelset. They sold new for about $1500 ($1300 if you got a deal) and near new, you'll find them listed at right below a grand. Awesome bike and popular enough that you can find one with a little work. You might even call around to Bianchi dealers to see whether they have any late model new ones in stock that they'll deal on.

Bikesdirect.com has a Reynolds 853 steel bike with Ultegra 10-speed triple, for $1395. Rest of the parts (mostly Ritchey, Reynolds Ouzo fork, etc.) are decent as well. Don't know about the quality of the frame...

For $1500, you could also build up something pretty nice from scratch. A Surly Pacer frame/fork for $290, an Ultegra 10-sp double group for $650, an Ultegra/Open Pro wheelset for $230.

Then, you could finish it off with a Brooks saddle ($50), a Chris King headset ($130), Thomson Elite seatpost ($68), Thomson Elite stem ($65), and Nitto Classic Road bars ($25).

If I did the math right, that's around $1500, plus shipping/tax, etc. Plus whatever you spend on bar tape, pedals, and tires, and whatever your LBS charges you to assemble it. So really more like $1700, but you'd have a classic steel bike built to last a long, long time.
