Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Random Question: Highest watt output ever recorded?

Anyone know what the highest watt output by a cyclist is? I think Landis said he was able to reach 1100+ (for a few seconds) recently while mountain biking after hip surgery. Anyone have a link to the highest ever recorded?

It's a lot more than 1100. IIRC there were some track sprinters somewhere in the 2400 range.

WOW. Any links to that or ideas of how I'd search on google for it?

This article studied three "elite track cyclists" and mentions peak powers of 1729-2282W.

But still, if that's true I might have a higher 5-second power than Floyd (1163). So I'm thinking it's probably higher than mine, but that's just a guess.

R600DuraAce hit something like 40,000 watts recently while on a recovery ride through the park....

...at least that's what I hear...

Then he went back in time when his flux capacitor kicked in.

Yeah, he was trying out a new custom-made dial and his powertap melted.

Cycling isn't about highest power output. It's about highest power output for duration of time.

I would say a lot of guys on here have peaks higher than Floyd. I read somewhere that he just hit 1000 this past year.

That's correct. Cipolini could hit the 2k at the end of a stage
And compared to a track cyclist thats next to nothing....

It was the power number he got recently while mountain biking after his hip surgery.

That makes a lot more sense...

Hell, *I* can do close to that. I bet Landis does 1500 easy.

Now he's off somewhere kicking Gino Bartoli's ass. Next week he moves on to Pelissier.

While both those statements may be true, the second doesn't follow from the first. Chris Boardman has often been quoted as saying he never broke the 1000W mark.

I'm sure there are a few guys in the Pro Peloton that haven't cleared 1000 watts. But it doesn't matter, they're still pros, and we're still here trying to compare ourselves to them.

Certainly not 1000w while doing TTs or going for hour-records. No one can sustain 1000w. But if you put him into a pack-sprint, he'll break 1000w without any problems... Most of the sprinters in the peloton, like McEwen or Boonen can reach 1500-1700w.

what the hell? when i go to my 24 hr fitness the cycling machine can measure output in watts. I put it on the highest setting and I can only get 378. this is for a burst of a few seconds. and the resistance is very tough, i am doing it at 140 cadence for about three seconds.

A 175lb mid pack CAT-5 should be able to sprint at around 1000w-1100w without too much drama.

A decent 175lb pro road sprinter might crank out 1700w-1800w.

And everything in between...

The problem is that your cycling machine just measures the speed and uses a resistance curve to calculate the wattage at steady state. Acceleration is not taken into account. So if you go from 300 watt speed to 400 watts, and the machine doesn't care if you got there in 5 seconds with a 1200 watt burst or spent 5 minutes accelerating.

Allegedly, average peak for Euro pros is 15 watts/kg with Bettini allegedly closer to 20 per. Nothstein claimed 2200 watts peak.

15-20w/kg is their peak at the end of a stage I'd think.

I know lots and lots of amateur hacks who sprint over 15w/kg when fresh.

At an HPV club event someone hooked up a wattmeter between a resistance load and a recumbent pedal-powered generator. That was some 30 years ago and as nothing more then a commuter I peaked at 1,400 watts.
