Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

True. Though the real issue in many cases, seems to be that in crashes, there can be hidden damage to CF handlebars that is not immediately obvious... you can imagine that if there is no team car nearby and/or they have to hop right back on the same bike, you can have a potentially hairy situation further down the course.

Evidently, the only guy on Disco who uses carbon bars is Levi.

If that were the case, none of them would ride 120, 130, or 140mm stems. And none of them would ride frames that look too small. If you look at everyone on CSC, they are definitely not opting for the larger of two frame sizes.

Basically, that's pretty much the opposite of what every professional does.

Go here to see lots of stem, and lots of exposed seatpost: https://weightweenies.starbike.com/ph...rnia&start=300

I have yet to be convinced that carbon bars will fair worse in a crash than aluminum, I've seen many aluminum bars snap in a crash. I've been riding CF bars on my MTB for three years now.

Yes, but according to Tour, the average TDF bike last year was over a pound above that limit. not all of those guys are weight weenies.

Duke's right, most pros opt for the smaller frame size for stiffness and tighter wheelbase, not larger.

Jens Voight:
Jens has an interesting position. His saddle seems to be moved forward quite a bit, and with that long stem he looks to be in a TT like position.

That's sort of the point, I think. Not trying to be sarcastic here, but it is plausible that a carbon bar beneath the bartape exhibits small fractures, but who can tell during a stage race? The bar may still be in one piece and cursory pressure tests while the rider re-mounts might incorrectly lead them to believe the bars are safe to ride on.

Here's an article at Pez with a Disco mechanic. Halfway through he talks about carbon bars:

Pez: I see everyone is on aluminum bars.

Craig: Yeah, Levi Leipheimer is the only guy who rides carbon. The problem is that if you crash with carbon bars then you have to change them because there could be an impact fracture in there that you can't see.

Go here: https://s72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...201/?start=all

They ALL ride big stems, smaller frames, long seatpost, usually some setback.

Also, check out pages 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22 of this thread: https://weightweenies.starbike.com/ph...fornia&start=0

i looked at it quick, and from the side it looked like the Toupe World Champion Saddle, but after closer examination it doesn't look like it...

He worked hard for every one of those clashing colors and wears them all in great style.

Good point. I'm not a dwarf so I generally skip the small sizes when looking at a geometry chart. Its unlikely that Bettini would have been able to get low enough on a 52, plus theres that stem/weight distribution/handling thing.
