Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

computer cable routing

I'm looking at getting a cateye astrale 8 computer. It has a rear wheel/pedal sensor.
Their directions show using zip ties to hold the cable. YECH.
Has anyone here used small clear tape, or glue, or anything other than zip ties to hold the cable under the main tube?
How'd it work?
Photos?

I used the enclosed cable ties. I don't even notice them any more. If you zip them up tight and cut the ends off, it shouldn't be very noticeable.

Zip ties are available in many attractive colors--electronic supply stores (not Radio Shack--real electronics supply stores!) are a good source. You can probably find something close enough to your frame color to avoid serious cognitive dissonance, unless you've got a recent Pegoretti, in which case you're on your own.

What do you do with all the extra wire going from the base station to the sensors? My wife and I recently got bikes and being the great husband that I am, I decided to install the comp on hers first in case there were any snags in installation I'd know for when I do mine, and the only thing that came up during the install was a lot of extra wire, my solution (which doesn't look all the great but did solve the problem) was to wrap the excess cable around the brake/shifter(I'm at work can't remember which one) cable housing.

<edited to fix confusion... hopefully>

The only area I use zip ties is to tie down the sensors. Other than that I just loop it around the downtube cables. Clean and kinda looks cool. Also an easy way to use up all the extra wire slack.

If you use a cable tie you simply clip it with wire cutters or a pair of sissors. What you describe sounds like the thin wire twist ties like you find on a loaf of bread. You can cut those, too, or just keep bending them until the wire breaks. No need to wrap extra anywhere, which will look worse.

Thanks for the help however what I should have said was the extra wire going from the base unit to the sensors, sorry for the confusion and thanks for giving help

For the extra wire, I just double it up on itself until it's tight, then wrap a small piece of electrical tape around it, and ziptie the whole deal.

How about a dap of automotive trim adhesive on the wire to "glue" it to the down tube. The 3M type should not hurt the paint, but you will never get the wire off without destroying it.

I used hot glue, and it worked for a while. Then the glue popped off, so I switched to colored zip ties.

I wonder if you could route the wire through the frame tubes... hmm, probably not.

Thanks for the suggestions, I wont get a chance to mess with the bike till tomorrow evening, I'm leaning towards a combination of bundling the extra wire and zip ties, but we'll see

I use electrical tape that matches the color of the frame and put the excess cable under the bar tape.

I've used thin slice (cut thin slices of tape with an exacto) of black electrical tape. I didn't use any zip tie to hold the wires, only on the sensors; (note the extra wire folded by the stem and black taped)

It's free fall on the downtube, but It's secured on either ends on the cables housing and kept there very tight. If I had to do it again, I would use a zip tie to hold the cable right after the bottom bracket on the chain stay.

Next time, I'm using heatshrink tubing.

I went with the cableties that came with the cateye, As for the extra slack.... I coiled it around the brake cable between the stem and the handlebars. This will get rid of the slack and leave enough not to over stretch the wire. just be sure to turn the handlebars to their limits and watch the slack in the wire before you tighten everything up.

I wrap the wire around the shift cable for the cadence sensor, and the front brake for the front speed sensor. I just wrap it and check, rewrap and check, until the length is right.

btw anybody know where to get celeste zip ties? That's the only color I can't seem to find.
