handlebar tape removal...

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

handlebar tape removal...

I'm trying to replace the handlebar tape but how do you guys remove the gunky residue and adhesive from the tape?

I've tried using a scraper, blow dryer, and its taking forever! Is there some kind of solvent or something to dissolve that stuff?

Leave it on and put new tape over it.

I'm confused. Why do you need to remove the adhesive from the tape? Can't you just rip off the tape? Are you trying to get the adhesive off of the handlebars? Try Goo Gone.

Spray a little WD-40 on a rag and use it to clean the bars. It will remove the tape residue.

Its not necessary to remove it. If anything, it will help adhere the new tape.

Left over tape adhesive will add significant weight and drag, not to mention throw off handling of the entire bike. I would replace the handlebars completely, maybe even the entire bike.

I've got a sticker I'm trying to remove from my bicycle. What do you guys recommend that's safe for paint?

Let give a disclaimer first; this is a method that I have not used but have read BF post describing it.

Take a hair dryer and warm up the sticker then it will peel off easily...

tell me how it works.

That works for cars (The "Civic" sticker that was on the old Hondas.) Takes some time and effort, but it works.

If your bars are aluminum, try mineral spirits or acetone (nail polish remover if there's a gal around). A bit fumy, but acetone will melt the adhesive right off. Just don't use it on painted surfaces - may soften the paint.

i was thinking about using that but didn't want to risk damaging anything. acetone works wonders in removing wax off my surfboards. guess i'll give it a try.

I used lighter fluid before to remove tape residue off of my mountain bike and that worked great. Just don't get the pressurized version.

This is why I NEVER buy bar tapes with adhesive. Who needs adhesive on bar tape anyways.

Guys like me who require 46cm bars and are affectionately called 'bruiser' by their club mates.
