Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Opinions wanted on a bike

Hello, new guy here. I used to do quite a bit of mountain biking a few years ago, doing road training with my mountain bike (100-120 miles a week or so on a 2000 Gary Fisher Kaitai) and I'd like to get back into it, but I'm wanting a real road bike. The problem is that I have several expensive hobbies to feed, so I'm looking used. What can anyone tell me about this thing I found on Ebay? I'm thinking I want something newer (seller claims it's a '98 model) but is there any reason this couldn't serve my fairly basic needs for a season or two until I can better justify spending > $1000 on a bike (I mean, sheesh, I spent that much on my motorcycle...)

I would just get a properly fitted entry level bike from a local bike store. You can probably find one either this year or last years model for 500-700. A properly fitted bike will be crucial to your cycling comfort. A regular tune up will also be necessary and is free for the life of the bike at most shops if you buy the bike from them.

(after all these Ryanf posts I'm starting to second guess my own spelling...fitted? is that the correct verbage?)

edit: Webster says:to measure for determining the specifications of something to be worn by <fitted him for a new suit> ...close enough...

True. I may just go to a shop just for the fitting, but I have a problem with getting something new at a shop; they tend to cost more. Free tune-ups, I can take or leave. I've been working on bikes/cars etc since I was a little kid. That's why this one not shifting doesn't really worry me. I'm mostly interested in if this bike is any good (ie, how good was it when it was new, and how much better have bikes gotten since then. I'm at least 5 years behind when it comes to keeping up with what's on the market.)

Have you tried Craigslist? Sometimes you can find pretty good deals on there and you can search locally so you can check it out before buying it.
Good luck!

If you can get that bike for sub $350, I'd say go for it, but if not , you might as well find a Trek dealer and buy a new 1000 for around $700, and get a bike that will last you a lot longer.

"Verbiage"
n 1: overabundance of words

Kind of fitting for this forum.
