Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

An embarrassing example of the fact that roadies don't do much upper body...

My brother-in-law is a video game designer, and as a result has video game consoles numbering in the double digits... His most recent addition is a Nintendo Wii. I played some Wii boxing, bowling, and tennis with him for a couple hours, and I can honestly say my arms and shoulders are sore now, 2 days after the fact. I'd love to blame it on some hard sprinting yesterday, but I don't think that was it.

Yes, my upper body is sore from playing video games. I guess I'm a real roadie now.

This, I think, is the reason why the Wii is the greatest video game invention ever. It actually involves some (not much) physical exertion. So all those kids staying inside playing video games will at least be burning some calories and working some muscles besides those in their thumbs.

Yeah I tend to post them in threads about rollers.

This is the first thread about the Wii I've seen however.

I've a V-shape upper body...but every time I climb a steep hill, I'm thinking of all that extra "dead weight" I'm dragging up the hill...

DrPete, I thought I read in another thread that you're 91kg. Unless 6'5" I don't think you're challenging Rasmussen yet.

Maybe you didn't do enough warming up before, or stretching? I usually do a little before I play Wii. Old habit from my tennis days.

No, I definitely don't have Rasmussen arms just yet...

I think a little pre-Wii stretching would've helped.

I do think it's a great development, though. There's some actual physical activity involved, and it's good for the whole family--it's the first time I've ever played video games with my wife!

I looked in the mirror yesterday and realized the same thing yesterday. My chest is loosing mass (what little it had) and I'm not losing weight. I've only had a bike 3 weeks, my legs are a bit bigger and way more muscular. It's sad, and I need to fix it.

I noticed my arms were way sore after playing, i think it's from throwing out your shoulder/elbow so much. It's not a physical exertion so much as a thrown out arm, so blame it on not enough resistance in the remote

Three weeks? I find it difficult to believe that the muscle mass in your legs has grown, and atrophied in your arms. Three months is a different thing.

It really isn't because I had been strength training during the winter and cut back considerably to focus on running and riding. It wasn't a big difference in upper body mass, but I can tell.

It took that to make you realize it? I new it the first cold ride I ever did because my size small arm warmers slide down my arms while my size large shorts squeeze my thighs.

DrPete, did you take the 'fitness age' test?

it's on the Wii sports disc and you do a bunch of silly exercises, and it tells your your 'age' based on how well you do in the various exercises.

it's fun.

Noodle arms FTW. Guys that haven't seen me since I quit bodybuilding and got into cycling a few years ago usually look at me and ask what happened as if they're concerned for my health

Thankfully my torso has a layer of "cosmetic" fat keeping my overall appearance proportionate.

No, that was still OK. Just a little extra whining about sore muscles.

I have a bit too much natural arm/shoulder musculature. It does jack **** for me in the sport I love. But it looks cool in a wife beater shirt. Note arms on attached photo from 12 years ago. They're about the same now. At least I can do push ups. I have that going for me.
