Suggestion for Good user for around $650

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Suggestion for Good user for around $650

I could use some advice for a good user (55cm) used or new for a firm budget of around $650. I pretty much only ride track bikes myself so I'm a bit out it in regards to geared bikes, components & what works but my roomate is looking for one to train with his mates. I'm spoiled with good solid wheels and so on and I have more to budget to work with but my roomate doesn't. You don't get much for $650 for a geared bike.

Would be much appreciated for any suggestions?

Went to the LBS's and didn't find much of anything of the $, looked on eBay but difficult to know what was worth while in that price range.

Cheers,

Mr Macgee

Buy new. Trek 1000, Giant OCR3, LeMond Etape, the entry level Masi, etc. You can find any of those for under $650 on sale, with some money to spare on accessories. Ride it for a year, sell it, upgrade.

i spent 750 on a specialized elite triple ( $1300 ) usually.. and its an awesome bike. i used to ride trek and i switched over when i bought this one.. the extra 100 dollars is well worth it. carbon forks and seat post, shimano 105 components. Just set your maximum bid to 650 when you see one. abcommerce sells them on ebay

Thanks for the Suggestion on the Specialized Allez.

Looking at new bikes and there just too junky at this price level, I can't imagine them holding up being ridden on a daily schedule without problems or getting out of tune compared to a better bike.

How about any suggestions for good used models that would sell in this price range?

Thanks

Keep in mind that a used bike comes with used components. Of course the frame might less junky on a used higher end bike, but for $650 you're going to have a tough time finding a used bike with components that are going to last as long and come as in good condition as a new bike of a lower spec (if you are expecting to find something for $650 you might want to re-examine your use of the work junky).

But, of course you'll be happier with a nicer bike. Basically just going up a level includes the Bianchi Eros, Trek 1500, LeMond Tourmalet, Giant OCR2, Specialized Allez Elite, Fuji Roubaix, Masi Nuovo Strada, and a few more. All of those can be found new for under $1000 (but not $650). Some can be found for around $750 in last years clearance models. You could probably find any of them used on eBay for $650, but you aren't going to be able to test ride them.
