Bicycling Magazine for FREE???

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bicycling Magazine for FREE???

Well, I got a Bicycling Magazine two months ago, and thought nothing of it. Sometimes they do that as promotion. However, I got one again last and this month like clockwork. I seems I'm getting them like a subsrciption now. I asked my wife if she subsrcibed, and she didn't. We don't know why, but it keeps showing up. Not that I mind, it's not the greatest magazine, but it has few good articles, and of course lots of ads for gear and bikes, etc.

The only reason I can think of, is perhaps one of my purchases for gear somehow triggered a retailer to add it on as a subscription (some do that).

Or, maybe I have a secret admirer.

I became a team member almost a year ago. I doubt that's what did it. Unless it was one of my recent purchases. I did buy some clothes and such a few months ago.

If Bicycling magazine is free now, at least the readers will be getting their money's worth.

With Performance, I think they give you a free subscription now if you make a purchase over $100 - or something along those lines.

What is a good road cycling magazine you would recommend then?

On another note, I got a free 12 mo sub to Bicycling as a Team Performance member. It is a bit trend-heavy and OCP.

I pretty much stick to online offerings, but cyclingnews.com and velonews are what I usually look at... Also, pezcyclingnews.com has good stuff most of the time.

I think that they are a paid advertisement mostly. The bike reviews are kind of lacking the bite they need when a pile of poop comes across their desk. Usually accompanied by a relief fund for intestinal discomfort.
Take for instance Autoweek. They found a steering problem on a SUV and tore it up for the lack of engineering. And then proceeded to tell potential buyers what they needed to do to fix it if they where already plagued by the purchase or they couldn't live another day with out buying into it.
Good reporting.

I get Rolling Stone in the mail. Never subscribed. Nobody got it for me as a gift. And I hate it...it goes straight in the trash.

If I got Bicycling for free, I'd at least flip through it.

Let's put it this way. I look forward to and gladly pay for my subscription of Backyard Poulty magazine. I have yet to read an issue of Bicycling that was worth any price.

No, that's ok. After I'm done staring at the womens white lycra Etxe-Ondo ad, I'll toss it in the recycle bin.

It is repetitive and superficial. There is good advice for people who are total newbies, but beyond that it is worthless.

No scanner, but I'll rip the page out and sell it to you for $5 plus shipping.

What?! You mean I don't even get intellectual property rights to my OWN smart-a$$ comments?

Really, though, Bicycling wears out quickly. The basic pattern is:

"Lose 10 lbs by next week!"
"Become a Cat 1 in 30 days!"
"Greatest bike ever!"
"Best training tips! Be faster than you've ever been!"
"Best foods ever for riding!"

Multiply by 12 for a complete 1-year subscription.
