How do you pronounce...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How do you pronounce...

How do you pronounce...

Campagnolo (is the g hard sounding or silent like champagne?)
Record (ree-kord or wreck-ord?)
Bianchi (bee-yawn-chi or bee-yawn-key?)
Mavic (mah-veek or mav-ick?)

Thanks in advance!

It's actually Japanese, so more like SHEE MAH NOH - DUE R/DAH AY SU which is the way I always pronounce it. Especially when I'm talking to myself.

And Ma ku do na ru do is "McDonald's" of course.

This reminds me of Texans saying anything.

They can't even pronounce their own words for dang sakes. I lived in Austin for a while and the pronunciations were sometimes so totally mind boggling, that I wanted subtitles.

INPUT => (RULES-LESS TEXAN PROCESSOR) => OUTPUT

Gruene -> "GREEN"?!
Plano -> PLAY-NO (ok, so it's close to PLAH NO)
Llano -> LA-NO (LA as in lack, forget about the double L making a Y sound -- somehow different than rules for Plano)
Guadalupe -> GWAH DUH LOOP
"He didn't" -> EDEN ("He didn't do it" -> "Eden do it." Also SHEDEN.)

And my personal favorite
Manchaca -> "Man Shack" !!! WTF?! That's neither right nor moral.

However Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin would pronounce it is how it's pronounced. If Sherwin pronounces Liquigas as "Leekigas", then Leekigas it is.

I thought there's no "R" sound in Japanese, only "L"?

That's not part of Texas.

It was tough, though, when I lived near Ft. Worth and tried to convince half my high school that Monticello wasn't Monty-sell-o.
