i was in good shape, not so much now

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i was in good shape, not so much now

since it was a beautiful day i decided to go on my "daily" ride today. this ride is a 50 mile straight out & back that became my daily ride last summer. i would do this ride 5-6 times a week and logged almost 7,000 miles in 2006.

between mid december 06 to early march 07 i did not do any outdoor rides and in that time i probably only rode the trainer in the basement 15-20 times. in the last 2 weeks i rode outside 7 times averaging 35 miles each.

so i headed out with two water bottles, no food, and a great attitude. same thing i did with ease on my last 50 miler back in december. that was a mistake. the first 35 were ok but the last 15 i was big time dieing. could only muster 11-13 mph, kept on asking myself "why don't you just pull over & rest for 5-10 minutes?" (of course i couldn't), why didn't i bring anything to eat, when is this going to end? almost 4 hours later & i still feel like crap.

anyway, i'm going out tomorrow to do the same thing but this time i'll be smarter and bring some fuel.

damn, i WAS in good shape.

I figure you can't start off where you finished the season in your best shape. I was riding strong last year doing 25 plus mile rides and trail riding. Starting back I can turn a good time but I feel it doing 20 miles. DON'T BITE OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW YOU'LL GET IT BACK FAST, JUST BUILD SLOWER

Take tomorrow off or go for a real short easy ride, your body needs time to repair itself. The next long ride will be easier and in two weeks you'll be surprised how far you've come along. Just don't push yourself too hard at first.

I feel your pain bluecd. I have gained 15 pounds since the Reston Century last summer. I have been on the indoor bike several times and some weight lifting but I have a lot of work to do.
