Another Garmin Edge Question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another Garmin Edge Question

If you are going to do a ride shorter than 3.5 hours do you set the GPS recording to every one second or do you leave it on smart recording? What would be the effect of going from smart recording to every one second. Most of my rides are less than 3.5 hours, so should I use the setting of every one second?

I leave mine on smart recording, one less thing to worry about.

I see no reason not to use 'Smart recording'.

Mike, I leave it on smart recording all the time. I believe, but could be mistaken that "Smart Recording" records track information based of change of direction, speed or HR. The other obviously once every second. Others have mentioned the number 600+ as the points per hour recorded with "Smart Recording" approximately once every 6 seconds.

Road rides are generally more consistent in terms of average speed and terrain (grade/altitude). I use smart recording. I suppose if I sprinted for 20 yards or less that could potentially be smoothed over depending on how the sample ended up, but in the end it'll be fine.

Sprinting would be a change in speed, so it would be recorded no matter how short the duration. Wouldn't it?
