Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OCP Question

After reading a few of the more OCP threads this week (cleaning white bar tape, matching your gatorade to your frame, etc) and going for a ride yesterday and finding myself the only cyclist out of about 15 on our little suburban bike lane route not wearing spandex for a 25 mile ride in town (And most of the ~15 had on full kit!) I began to get a little curious. Are you all this obsessive in other areas of your life or is it pretty much limited to cycling? Do you have to have the right outfit for every activity you do? The right gear? The right color gatorade?

Personally, I have shoes for every occasion (hiking, running, cycling, brown and black for work, golf, etc.) but that's about the limit of my madness, so there's not meant to be any criticism here, I'm just interested in exploring the OCP psyche.

Wearing bike shorts and jersey to ride a bike for 25 miles is not OCP. It is about comfort. And all of my clothes match. Does that make me obsessive because I don't want to look like a slob?

Just as you wouldn't wear sneakers on a rocky hike, I wouldn't wear a pair of jeans to ride my bike.

I am guilty of the shoes thing. I have a shoe tree in my closet b/c I have so many. They're all for different sports/ activities.

Of course, and hipsters ride fixies because they like totally feel connected to the road and aware of their surroundings. (I actually had bike shorts with a chamois on underneath my shorts, shhh.)

You just need to come out of the closet and embrace your OCPness.

BTW-I don't think wearing spandex makes one OCP...not that there's anything wrong with that of course.

I know some guys who race and they always wear their full kit whenever they are on the bike. Be it a training ride or commuting to work. I don't pass judgement on anyone for wearing a team kit and not just because some of them might be pros; it just doesn't matter to me.

I do think guys who wear mtb gear or regular street clothes look a little dorky though.

so then you are saying every one not wearing a matching kit looks like a slob?

No, but you try to put yourself together the best you can with what you have. Why can't or shouldn't that extend to cycling? I mean, I wouldn't wear a horizontal-striped yellow and orange sweater with green and red plaid pants to work. Unless I was one of the crazy people who then gets to be on "What Not to Wear".

I think it's the quantum electrodynamical law which applies to spin-1/2 particles and is the relativistic generalization of the Schrödinger equation.

I have a couple things I'm pretty OC about. The biggest one is probably spreads on sandwiches (especially peanut butter). Complete, uniform, 3/32" coverage is a must. People laugh at me when I make my PB&J's. Most things I couldn't care less about.

All my rock climbing gear matches.
Most of my ski equipment matches.
All my computer equipment is black with blue lights...
If I could afford scuba gear it would too.

obsessive compulsive poseur?

Loosely used to describe people who have Lance's bike and cycling garb when they can't sustain 400W for 4 hours like Lance and I can.

Sometimes my wife accuses me of being borderline metro-sexual. Then again, I actually wear overalls on occasion.

They mock what they do not understand, Hip. To be OCP you must live OCP. To live OCP you must be OCP. Do or do not, there is no try. Be the ball.

That sort of thing.
