Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The ultimate op, the snip, the chop etc

I curtailed my baby making ability via surgery yesterday. My Doc recommended staying off the Bike for 1 month

Any experiences out there?

BS. Your Doc is looking out for himself, not you. My brother had it done and was off the bike for a week. He had zero ill effects.

Serious repsonse here....

I was off the bike for a week I think, when I did mine. I started on the trainer at that point and things were still sore. Probably should have waited 10-14 days. I didn't ride outdoors until later in the 2nd week and things were still tender.

Just make sure to ice to keep the swelling down and listen to your body. If it hurts, stop!

After about a month I was pretty well good as new and the riding returned to normal

just a good story that will make you feel better:

when someone i know got his done a coupla years back, they had just finished the surgery and were done soldering or whatever it is they do with some really hot instrument. as the doctor pulled away, the tip of the heated thing accidentally touched the guy's scrotum resulting in a loud wail and his hips rising three feet off of the table. lol. at least you didn't have that happen!

I got myself done almost 2 months ago. I learnt that it's best to wait until your boys are feeling normal until you abuse them on the bike. It's just not worth it. I later learned after the surgery that 10% of patients suffer from long-term chronic pain. Then a "friend" sent me this: www.dontfixit.org

I dont know about you, but I was ok with the soreness for a couple of days, but after day 5 or 6 I started to worry about the pain sticking around. I then played it safe, didn't go near the bike. I mostly stuck with weights and using the elliptical. After 2 weeks I'd say I was 95% back to normal, and could ride without worry.

I rode my bike to and from the surgery, dammit. I was going to just do the whole procedure by myself on the john but I couldn't find the can opener or the black sewing thread.

Man, that's like asking someone if they meant to spell "love" with a "p" on their new tattoo... just plain old mean.

4 weeks is the typical time for healing of soft tissue. You don't want to wait will be your choice, the doc's recommendation is within normal limit.

My wife has been bugging me to have this done...I'm dreading it quite frankly.

Maybe if I tell her how long I'll be off the bike it will sway her opinion.

I was off the bike 9 days. I think my doctor told me 2 weeks, but I jumped the gun.

Baby #3 is on the way right now and my wife and I are ready to make the same move. Due to the requirement of no exercise for at least 3 weeks afterwards (especially including cycling, I'd imagine), I decided to put it off until this Fall.

I'm not married, and from what I've picked up in this forum and seen in real life thank God, so perhaps its just because I am naive to the subject, but what about having the wife's tubes tied? You get to ride your bike without the risk of pain, there's no doctor taking a scalpel to your naughty bits, and you still have the option of skipping town and starting a new family.

The key for me was the first 48 hours, I didn't do a thing but swallow ibuprofen and alternated frozen bags of corn and peas, after a couple of days I was fine for walking, a couple more I started jogging, after a week I was on the bike. You really have to sut down your life for the first two days,

I had it done last September. Spent 3 weeks off the bike. First ride back was only 2 miles; felt fine, maybe a little tender. Second ride back was 45 miles; felt fine. Haven't thought about it since.

I will recommend however that if/when you have the operation, you consider not going to an industry trade show that requires non-stop walking around a huge convention center floor only four days after the surgery...and by all means, if you do go to this trade show absolutely DO NOT let your co-workers take you out after the trade show floor closes, get you all liquored up, & then TAKE YOU BOWLING!!!!!

I probably could've been back on the bike after only 7-10 days if it weren't for that minor oversight on my part.
