What animal(s) did you see on your ride today?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Last week I saw two huge vultures dragging a dead opposum off the road. Had to slow down and swerve to avoid them.

Today was my running day. I saw several squirrels, including a really dumb one that was lucky not to get run over.

Lots of birds: egrets, blue herons, coots, grouses, mallards, black and redtail hawks, common and redwingeed blackbirds, sparrows, kites.

Lots of farm animals: hogs, cattle, horses, sheep, goats.

A few humans.

Birds. Almost all of them were clinging to the ground though. One would try to fly but as soon as it left the ground it would get Randy Savaged to whereabouts unknown by the wind.

Last summer wife and I are riding on Skyline Drive and, coming up a hill, I see what looks like a very large stick in the road. Thinking "hmmm...no stick in the road when we came through earlier". Then we get closer and I see that it's a snake. Then we get closer still and I see that it's a rattlesnake. Facing the direction we need to pass. Well, got by it...

Coming up another climb a a few minutes later, wife's in front when suddenly a black bear cub darts across the road about ten feet in front of her wheel. She says "I wonder where his mother is" and I say "I don't think we really should stick around and find out" and she (not exactly a strong climber) suddenly gives the best impersonation of Lance Armstrong on Alpe d'Huez I've ever seen.

Lately, nothing but dogs and seagulls....

I saw a bunch of dead birds for some reason, oh and a snake, and a roadrunner. But actually the roadrunner was yesterday.

Dead badger, dead pheasants, dead hedgehog, dead rabbits (in one case the head was separated from the body by a two foot long steak of blood)... the amount of roadkill around here at the moment is amazing. I think I saw more varieties of dead animals than living ones.

Oh I did see a bumblebee when it hit me in the face - probably died from the impact

I've seen this guy before, but with this thread in mind, today I stopped and snapped some cellphone pics in sub-par lighting. Rather unusual for rural Laurens County, SC, USA.

I think my most memorable encounter was going down a little one-lane road through the woods towards the lake when a Great Blue Heron took off from the side of the road about 10m ahead of me. I slowed to 28kph and followed about 3-4m behind and about 3m below him until I had to break off because the road ended and he continued to the lake.

I saw several young rattlesnakes. I stopped to take a photo of this one and he slithered off into the ditch. I used a big stick and tried to get him back on the pavement for a better photo but he got all hissy so I let him be and the background isn't great photography.

Also saw a gruppetto of turkeys. I spoke to them in turkey gobble talk and they called back to me.

Several horses and a few hawks, which are a somewhat rare sight in the New Brunswick, NJ area. Also caught a glimpse of a doe in the woods.

Guide dogs in training too! The cutest little golden retriever puppy was outside my Oceanography class...lol

A squirrel came a inch from jumping through my front spokes today. I was doing intervals on a 2-3% uphill brick path. I was going about 20mph and accelerating. Had he not stopped, I would have cut him in half, bent my spokes and probably hit the deck. That's a bloody unpleasant thought right there.
