speedplay pedal carbon sole question.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

speedplay pedal carbon sole question.

i got my hands on a four bolt pattern shoe. the dmt radial. i read that the speedplay pedal is going to rub the carbon and that i need a shield plate to protect the sole. just put in an order but it won't be here for a while.

so my questions is, is there any way to protect it for now without the base plate?

Why does it need a shield? The cleat bolts to the bottom of the shoe. Since it is fixed how would it wear anything?

Normally, 4-bolt cleat bolts to 3-hole adapter plate, which bolts to the shoe.

With 4-bolt shoes, no adapter plate. The pedal can scrape up the sole of the shoe.

See the whole shebang here:

it's not fixed. there's float. so the pedal rubs.

i think i need longer bolts too. so i guess i'll have to wait anyways.

WTH? There are going to be so many scuffs and scratches on the soles, anything the pedal will do under the cleat will be minimal. Both my shoes that have speedplay cleats are scuffed a little but have no "wear" on the carbon.

Bolt 'em on and ride.

I know that they say to put the protector on. I have 3 bolt shoes so don't have to worry about it, but I can tell you that my shoes look like take more of a beating from standing at stop lights and missing as i reclip, then from the speedplay pedal.

Yup, this will work for awhile. The pedal eventually wore through the aluminum though.

You'll void the shoe warranty without it.

I used a milk carton and cutout a protector shim, that wore out a little after 500 miles or so. The stainless shim is what you need.
