Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When Roadies turn to the Dark Side

It is not a pretty sight.

First, an innocent "I'll try it just this once. What harm can it do?"

Then the rationalizations: "Well, it is a Bicycle. It can't hurt me. I'll only ride it on Wednesdays."

When the fairing arrives, the slippery slope has done its evil worst.

Until finally, the transformation is complete:

If Greg Lemond can be seduced by the 'bent side, what chance have we?

No, it's more like "When Young Roadies Turn Into Senior Roadies".

Hmmmmmm, it is like riding a moped. You have fun while doing it; but you would not want your friends to see you riding it!

Nah, that old dude is looking good. Check out those shades, with the Teva's and all - he is looking sweet! No fairing for him. At least he isn't in front of me in traffic behind the wheel of an SUV. More power to him.

I can see a bent for myself if it were for medical reasons but that would be the only reason I keep hearing that bents are so much faster than uprights but in the real world I have yet to see it. Could be because all of the bents I have ever seen have been piloted by Geritol gulping senior's. Ask me again in 20 years and maybe I will have changed my view.

^^^BINGO!

I used to think the same way...LAME LAME LAME....but you know what? I think it's great now. Look at that guy man...I hope I'm doing that at that age. Anything that gets you out there and active is a good thing for your health, and better than the 75% of people who do nothing more than sit around getting fat while doing nothing.

Indeed...more power to 'em.

When I can't bend over any more to ride my roadie....I'll go back to a hybrid flatbar....and from there to a bent....and from there to a trike....and no matter how many wheels it'll always be OCP baby.

I hope nobody was thinking I have anything against recumbents. All bikes are good, especially the ones not collecting dust in the garage.

Re-read my post please. What I said is in the "real world" ie: group rides, tour's...etc......I have yet to see it. Not that it does not exist but I have never witnessed a fast bent and I have seen a bunch of them. I am sure there are bent riders that can smoke a strong upright rider on any given day but I think they are few and far between. ALSO....Speed ain't everything so I am not sure my thoughts mean much anyhow
(can't believe I said "speed ain't everything)

The beard and long tights are the battle cry. They get killed on any climb but descents are brutal.

There's the key.

Like it or not, no matter how much you hate to look at it now, sooner or later - Young Guys Will Be Old Guys!!

That's if you're lucky enough to live that long.

We have a couple 'bent riders here. You just don't ever want to be the guy behind in the pace line. No draft at all.

I asked one rider about why no front fairing, and his comment was that at his normal 20-25 mph pace the fairing actually slows him down, but that making the back of the bike behind his seat more aero shaped resulted in a big increase in speed/ decrease in effort. Interesting.

BUILD A BIKE CAR!!!

When I was a little kid, I thought these ads in the back of Popular Mechanics were sooooo cool.

Made out of PVC piping, and uses real caliper brakes.

Imagine descending at 50mph with this baby. WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

That said, I can see one day I may be far too old to ride a fast roadie. I'll try to stick to two wheels as long as I can, but if ending up on a bent trike is my destiny, "Amen".

I'll be riding a bike for the rest of my life and if at some point I have to get a recumbent, I will, without hesitating. Beats taking transit or driving a car to work.

bent riders are cool by me, I was passing this guy when i was heading to birmingham from orlando, he was cooming from atlanta, i sat on the ground and listened to him talk for a bit, the stories he had and the mileage he had was amazing to me. plus he was alot more comfy than me.

but do you have to grow the beard when yo go bent?

I know I will! I mean, I'd have to take hormone injections to do it.

Look at them, though, they're all smiling.
