I basically just started in road biking at the end of January. I've been trying to get out after work now that we're in daylight savings time and I think that helps a lot but I haven't been very consistant with that.
anyway, I hopped on the bike this morning just as the sun came up and went out for a couple house. I wanted to check out a county park that's east of me with a velodrome and some other stuff so I figured I'd make that my target. I took the scenic route and ended up with a 36.6 mile loop. the bike performed perfectly and the weather was great.
As for the rider, I wasn't too bad off at the end. my legs were actually still ready to take on more miles. My butt was sore but not killing me. my lower back was not bad either and my upper back/neck was a lot better after you all suggested I keep my back flat and head down when riding. thanks! one question I have for you all is my feet. my knees are perfectly fine so I assume my cleats are adjusted correctly (I use SPDs) but the outside of my right foot was getting a little sore. my left one was fine though and both shoes felt comfortable. could this mean the cleat needs to be adjusted or could it be something with the arch of my foot maybe?
onw other comment I had. I now appreciate what you all go through trying to make up routes. I'm no where near the distances that most of you ride and I'm already having problems trying to come up with new routes. my ADD stops me from doing the same loop over and over and trying to plan out a 40 mile ride where you're not covering the same roads over and over is harder than you think.
thanks for the info in here too. there's been more than a few good tips that helped me get this far. I hope to be at 50 miles by the end of May. I just have to get my butt in gear with my training.

I think its great that you're setting bigger targets and I can see from your area (in Motionbased) that there aren't any quiet back roads for you to loop. You can always do out and back along the same road, though.
I'm amazed just how flat it is there - incredible!

I think I have a plan for my next ride. I am going to head a bit north first and then east. with that I should be able ot add about another 5-10 miles and then I might even zig zag north-south some more. but yes, the only really "quiet" roads are the ones that go through the housing complexes and most of those are gated.
oh, and it's super flat. those "peaks" are just overpasses that I hit along the way. haha.

Just checked where Weston was, and yes, the gated compounds pretty much tear up any sense of community in many areas of FL. Check with your LBSs. They may have some good routes figured out that will help save you some time.

i had the same problem with the same spot on my foot. loosening the velcro strap a bit helped it. the buckle was still secure as always. i did not feel like i compromised my foot security at all.
i think i have close to a D width...so a little wider. i think when you make the velcro too tight on a wide foot it reduces circulation and makes it sore after awhile.
but i have been biking less than you so i am just guessing on that.
good job on your loop!

Congrats! Sounds like the addiction is setting in...
As you start adding miles, try some endurox or recoverite post-ride. It'll help a little bit with those tired legs.

i always try to get my shoe velcro closures symmetrical between shoes. however, slight differences in shoes probably exist so i should stop that and go by feel...no brainer

It's supposed to rain tomorrow but I think I can get out for a nice recovery ride tomorrow morning. I think next week I might throw the bike on the car and drive down to the beach and then bike from there. different scenery and I can probably get in some more miles.
Drpete, where is a good place to get that stuff? I've been just doing my normal workout thing and eating protein after the ride with some glutemine. I guess I can look to see if GNC has it. during the rides I've been drinking the gatorade endurance. I really like that stuff.
Thanks again!

Way to go!
My feet got a little sore on the outside also. I tried some of these and they worked great!
Light weight and supportive. They distributes the pressure a little more evenly.
Now, my feet always feel great, even after long rides.
Soft sole stable trac.
Availabe here: finishline.com and other sports / running stors.
