Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Man how many avatars do you have Alonso22?

Giro. Great brand. I've crash tested one myself.

I've crash tested Vettas, Specialized, Giro, and Protec (not sure it they make helmets still). All but the Protect were fine. Obviously the Protec did it's job since I am still here, but it disintegrated

Bell Alchera is a good looking helmet that you should be able to find under 40 bucks.

Helmets from respectable brands (Bell, Giro, Specialized, Louis Garneau, Limar, Catlike, etc) that are marketed as Road or Road Racing helmets are going to be relatively low profile (no mushroom head) and sleek. The more you pay the more it'll make you look like a pro (at least from the ears up), but you can get some nice looking quality helmets for good prices - like the aforementioned Bell Alchera, or the Bell Furio. I've got the Bell Ghisallo - I think it's pretty darn cool and comfy, but I might go for a Giro Atmos or a Limar next just to give another fit a try.

I just picked up the Alchera from Nashbar and I have to admit, it's getting sent back. Looks like a mushroom on my head. Any suggestions on what helmets are less bulkier? It's hard to tell by pictures alone and my lbs has only has fred style helmets...

I rock a Giro Atmos. Great fit and relatively low profile. The Bell Sweep is supposed to be low profile as well (REI should stock both if you want to try them on first).

Either should be accomidating for your rag...I use a somewhat thick headband during the winter months with no real problems.

It's a helmet not a fashion statement.

Alchera is the best value of any helmet (my opinion of course). Excellent venting without being overly fragile. Can't be beat for $40. Only bad thing is the way Bell sets-up the straps when they ship the helmet, they need to be adjusted to get them to lay flat.

i'm sure you'll be happy with the atmos but, if for some reason you're not try out a specialized- i use a decibel (expensive) but i think the air-8 is a clean looking helmet that feels relatively comfortable for only 60 bucks.

+1, also try out the Bell Sweep R - comparable to the Atmos. Giro and Bell are the same company, the general rule of thumb is that Giro is for round heads, Bell is for oval heads.

It's a bummer that Selev isn't available in the U.S. AFAIK, same with Catlike (yet), they are some awesome looking helmets. But I guess that's what PBK is for.

I went with the Giro Atmos. It's not bulky, it's very light and it has most vents of all the helmets around. It's gets hot out there. I did get one in a size that can accomodate a skull cap underneath for the colder weather.

I've crash tested Vettas, Specialized, Giro, and Protec...
I hope you wear some kind of a warning device so people know not to ride near you.

define bulky... ALL helmets will turn the average joe into a mushroom head. Anyway, they're for safety, with minimal style impact if any. That being said... Giro Atmos covers my melon.

Big fan of the Giro Atmos myself. I have 2, and I just ordered my third in King of the Mountain Colours. Too bad there's no mountains around here

Extra ballsy. Of course, you'll never have to back it up, though, right?

i've got a Bell Ghisallo thats pretty mushroom like. I like the looks of the LAS Squalo but I need to try one on. I'd rock a Calike Whisper too if I could find one.

My Squalo will be arriving on my doorstep tomorrow, unless UPS drops the ball. I'm giddy. Or is that too strong a word?
