How long do you wait before leaving?
A friend told me to show up at his house for a ride this morning at 6:00 a.m. I got there at 5:59 a.m. and waited until 6:07 a.m. It was too cold to wait any longer so I just pedaled away and did the ride without him. How long do you wait before saying adios?

Yea seems kinda odd. For me it depends on the circumstances. (Can I reach them and are they running late or just MIA?)
Was he not home? Just not awake? I would have either knocked or left a note on the door. Maybe try his cell if he has one?

If you're late for a bike ride, nobody waits. Ever. Be early.

15 minutes.
But I'm with the others here. Why didn't you knock? It's one thing if you're meeting at a local coffee shop or some intersection somewhere, but if you're at his house you can easily get ahold of him. Maybe he was sitting inside where it was warm waiting for you to knock!

One group with which I ride gives a five-minute "grace" for weekend morning rides where we meet at our favorite LBS. Another faster group with whom I ride departs a different shop at 6:00 p.m. right on the button. It's all in the nature/culture/intentions of each group.
As far as the OP goes, if you were at a person's HOUSE to commence a ride I would have been calling on the cellular and knocking on the door. They might have had a blackout and his alarm didn't go off...and he would be appreciative that you "rescued" a training ride for him!

usually 5-10 minutes. Less if I'm alone. Living and riding with college kids makes the times really relaxed and we usually wait longer than we should.

Depends on your friends. Some guys always leave on time. If there are girls involved, however, times are a little more flexible.

I didn't have a cell phone and didn't want to wake up his family at that hour. He was probably either asleep, or getting ready to meet me, but in either case, I didn't have the guts to knock.

First, you live in San Diego. Its never too cold to wait.
Secondly, you should have just knocked and then made him tow you a minute for every minute he made you wait.

Five minutes early is on time. If you said 6 and it was after 6, move on.
I look at it like this: Late is an insult to me. It says "Your time doesn't matter."
Just leave.
