$1000 for a bike with first Century June 3rd
 

What would you buy?

I was in an accident and the bike was totaled. I should have about $1000 to work with. The Century is around Tahoe, and it is my first Century.

Some information about me. I am 6', 260 pounds, 33" inseam. I am a strong flat rider who struggles some in the hills, though I am getting better.

One LBS is pushing a Specialized Allez Sport for $929. Another LBS, a more expensive one, is pushing three different bikes. They are a LeMond Tourmalet for $1,250, a Jamis Ventura Elite for $1,300, and a Bianchi C2C Nirone for $1,449.

I can pony up some money above the insurance's $1000, but I want the best bike for the money for a person my size without adding in more than about $400.

Any comments on these bikes or suggestions for others?

$929 for an Allez Sport is way too expensive.

For a grand look if you up it just a bit you should be able to get something with a 105 groupo. Are you looking for a race or more relaxed geometry bike? Do you have anyone that deals giant or trek in your area? They both have some decent bikes in your price range. Deffinatly if you toss in a few hundred extra. Blake

1250 for a Tourmalet is expensive too.

I would look for a Trek 1500. I recently got my wife one with a full 105 group for $990. Great bike for the money IMO.

Personally - without looking at the actual specs, I'd go for the Lemond.

My note though would be that at your weight I'd work a deal to swap the stock wheels for a pair of Ultegra Hub/Mavic Open Pro rim in 36 spoke 3X lacing when you buy. They'll stand up to riding well and you'll be thankful you have them.

I'm an uber clyde (a tad over 300#) and I've got over 3,000 NYC miles on my wheels (exactly as described.) They are still spot on.

I would add, buy the most comfortable bike!

If you are thinking comfort then you proably want to try and find a Trek Pilot series and a Gaint OCR series to check out. The second link above from CCFISH81 is a good example pf a comfort bike.

Get the one that fits.

+1 on get the one that fits. Another thing - get one that is in stock and get it soon so you can get used to it before your June century.
