Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling w/ a Brace?

I thought I'd just add to all these posts about knees. I have patella tracking issues b/c of a strength imbalance in my quads and am working on strengthening them, but in the meantime I was wondering about a brace to help the ache in the meantime. I used to wear a brace back in the day when I ran a lot.

Have any of you worn a knee brace while cycling and if so, what kind? It seems that it would be pretty uncomfortable to me.

Doesn't seem to help for me, but maybe I just don't have the right brace (although the package said it helps in tracking). If they have straps, they seem to restrict the muscles as well. I had tendonitis as a teen, and those big braces squeezed the life out of my thighs, so I went to heating before the ride and icing after the ride, then wearing the braces elsewhere.

have you tried taping the patella in place? some taping patterns can keep the patella from rolling off the center, without having to tape all the way around the knee and thus block muscle compression, or without wearing a brace.

also, some neoprene knee supports with a patella cutout can help. the full hinge braces woud be a pain to cycle with. i know, i have worn one for many years myself before getting new ligaments built recently. i can't give you better advice as i can't see how bad your tracking problem is over the net.

this is something you should prob discuss with a professional like a physiotherapist rather than hope to do it yourself using a bad diagram from the net.

Since you are just a enthusiast I would reccomend staying off the bike until your muslce imbalance is corrected. You have a lot of cycling left in you. It doesn't take long to correct a muscle imbalance. Don't forget to slowly increase you time on the bike when you come back. What kinds of exercises are you doing?

Wall sits, inner leg raises and backwards step up.

one of my cycling buddies rides with the Cho-Pat double strap on his knee to address his patella tracking issue. He says it's an asset, doesn't interfere w/ pedaling at all.
