Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

"discovered" something better than an OCP roadie...

So i decided to put the lycra away yesterday and went out mountain biking - lo and behold while riping through trails covered in mud i stumbled upon a rare and unique specimen of OCPnecessity - on OCP x/c rider/mountain biker. He was in full kit, bright white tights and jersey with matching bike, helmet, and shoes. Looked like he had just stepped out of a photo shoot. I have never seen a person/bike that clean and that "OCP" on a trail in my whole life. It had just rained so he would have had to be working VERY hard to avoid the mud/mud puddles. I was looking behind him trying to figure out if there was a race/roadie parade going on that i didnt know about. Anyone here ever come accross such a unique specimen as this?

This isnt meant as a negative post, i just thought it hilarious and completely out of place - i can make fun of my roadie tendancies so why cant i joke around about other people with the same OCPness?

Maybe once the rain hit, he stayed there fearing a spec of dirt would harm his beautiful white kit. You should have gone back today to see if he was still there, waiting for the mud to dry up.

i'll never forget earlier this year i had on a fancy new kit- white and red jersey and shorts- and brand new white sidis. was out in the desert for a weekend and had to ride through an area of run off (black stincky road grimed rain water). it was about 30 feet across the road. halfway through a semi rolled by and sprayed me from top to bottom. he was rolling slow too, so it was a sustained blast of black sludge for 5 or 6 long seconds.
i was completely black, head to toe and wheel to wheel. for a split second i was horrifed. then i just started laughing so hard. at the end of the block i found a woman watering her lawn and kindly asked her if she would hose me down. she got a laugh to, and seemed to kinda enjoy it.
the kit and shoes have never been really white since...

I'm from Marin originally, the birthplace of mountain biking. Marin, especially West Marin, usually illicits images of granola, redwood trees, birkenstocks, etc. You can imagine the number of mountain bikers I see pulling away from my road rides onto the numerous dirt trails that a road-only cyclist can only dream about. You can also imagine their traditional uniform, baggy shorts, loose fitting jerseys, etc. But everyonce in a while I'll see what the OP has described, and I'll think something along the lines of "Silly mountain-biker, kits are for the road." Then of course they'll spin by me on a 15% grade and I'll die a little bit inside.

Ive heard rumors of a tribe of OCP riders that roam day and night through the trails looking for an exit that does not have a mud puddle - sometimes if you are really quiet at night you can hear the faint sound of an energy bar being unwrapped.

As a former mountain biker, I'm always the only one on group mtn rides wearing a lycra kit. Of course, I'm also the most comfortable.

A friend of mine had a jacked up 4WD truck and so did his neighbor. They would go out to some mud pits to go 4 wheeling. The neighbor would park his truck and watch everyone else because he didn't want to get his truck dirty. He also had a three wheeler in the back that he would take out and ride around in a little circle a few times and then put it back in the truck.

I used to coach kids soccer. Kids were about 8 years old. Rained like h**l the night before and the place was a mess. A kid who played the entire game and was involved with the action came off the field without a clump of mud anywhere. Everyone else was a mess. Still do not know how he did it but he was a neatnick anyway.

If I was drinking coffee, I would have spit it all over my keyboard. Thanks for the cool story, Bruce

I'm sorry for your poor kit, but the story was hilarious and your reaction was perfect.

That lady probably still tells that story, too.
