Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is it like skipping, or is it actually skipping? Can you pedal and feel no resistance?

Yea, pics would help. By last gear, do you mean the biggest cog in the back or the smallest cog in the back?

+1. I would throw a warning in. Adjusting the rear derailluer is easy but, if you screw it up, you could take out the spokes on the rear wheel.

And/Or screw your derailer up permanently, i would sugest that you either read that article ALL the way through, then VERY carfully make adjustments, or take it into a bike shop and have them fix it.

Could be a bent dérailleur hanger. Take it to the shop to be sure it's alright, then learn how to change it.

I still can't get an idea of the problem. Is the chain slipping over the gear you are in or is the chain trying to go to another gear or unable to go to another gear? Might it be the ratchet mechanism in your hub slipping?

Are you referring to your rear derailleur's smallest cog (AKA the rear's highest gear)? The lowest gear in the rear is the largest ring. The reverse is true for the front (largest is the highest).
On the one cassette I have played with this is tightened when you tighten the lockring. A cassette lockring tool costs $5.
