New Saddle Woes

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Saddle Woes

Upgraded from a Bontrager Race Lite Luxe saddle to a Specialized Toupe Team saddle three days ago. The first two rides (40 miles total) on the new saddle were ok, but the third ride (20 miles) today was pretty uncomfortable. My sit bones were both tender and painful.......Is this normal when changing from a well padded saddle (the Bonty is too soft) to a minimally padded one??.....I'm thinking my nether region wasn't toughened up enough with the softer saddle, and will take some time to do so......Any feedback on similar experiences??? I will say that my sit bones are screaming, but the numbness is gone from the cut out in the Toupe.

It took me about 150 miles (a week) on the saddle to get comfortable after I changed my saddle and my change was similar to yours. Stick with it a little, but if you don't feel comfortable after a good while change it.

BTW, after I changed from a soft stock saddle to a Selle Italia Tri saddle I had to nose it up a little and slide it a little forward.

150 miles on my toupe, first 70 sucked. Its good now. I learned to move it slightly more forward and angled down slightly compared to my old saddle.

Your sit bones probably aren't used to properly supporting your weight.

Solution = ride more.

If you don't like the saddle after another week or so with another 150 to 200 miles, there'll probably be somebody who's happy to take it off your hands.

Agreed -- I'd give a new saddle at least a week (>< 150 miles) and ideally two weeks before writing it off.

When I switched to a Toupe it really hurt my sit bones. Even now (700 miles), almost every ride, I feel pain in my sit bones for the first mile or so. It's still a lot better than other saddles, but hurts my sitbones at first.

I will definitely give the Toupe more time. I've been riding that soft Bonty saddle for 2+ years, so my arse hasn't been exposed to a "proper" saddle over that time. The fact that the "private" numbness has gone away is more important to me than some initial sit-bone pain.
