I don't know of an easy answer for this, but I'd suggest something like the following, though you may want to revise this if certain things don't work for you.
Open up the GPX file in something like Routeslip, or Bikely, or after converting it to KML with gpsbabel, in Google Earth. Then figure out which trackpoints you want to cut to and from. Then open up the gpx file in notepad (any plaintext editor) and cut out all points up to and from the trackpoints you want to save.
The idea is that since gpx doesn't really understand running length you've got to just remove the unnecessary trackpoints by hand.
There's probably a much easier and more slick answer to this question but I figure this is a decent quick and dirty method.

What kind of gps is it? Garmin's mapsource software will let you delete points. It's pretty easy to clean up your tracks with it. It is kinda finicky about importing gpx files from other applications so it may not work unless you have a Garmin.

GPX files are just text (a form of XML). You can open them in any text editor to slice and dice. Each track point has a timestamp, coordinates, elevation and possibly additional data, all bracketed by tags enclosed in angle brackets, similar to HTML.
