Who Gets Discovery Team?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who Gets Discovery Team?

Now that Discovery Channel has taken top team honors again in the Tour de Georgia, what company picks them up for the 2008 cycling year? Will it be an American or International team next year? Predictions & links to credible rumor sites start here. Let the fun begin!

Silly? Not from a business standpoint

After listening to the live Tour de Georgia on the Web this afternoon, there was a lot of speculation that Johan and company are "very close" to making an announcement and want to have this "deal well in the bag before the TDF." Makes sense, becasue whatever company it is, will need as much lead time as possible to design the kits, get the management team in order, etc. prior to the end of the '06 season.

The management team is in order...they wont be changing the team at all...just the big sponsor.

I read in a cycling mag that the parent owner of magellan and tom-tom gps units were already stepping up to be the next major sponsor. Was I dreaming??

Thanks,

The question is, will they have enough money like Discovery does, I read somewhere that the team got upwards of 20,000,000 a year in funds.

I don't know about what Disco is fronting but TMobile has a larger budget...like 2x (or at least they did in 06). Discovery has a VERY normal budget on the Pro Tour...like right on the average.

Warren Buffet has tons of money and loves to spend way too much on advertising, maybe GEICO, since they already advertise as much as Budweiser. I would have to support everyone else. Nothing I've heard, just annoyed by how much they advertise, which means they'll probably invade the one area I don't have to see them.

I read that MIO, a competitor to Magellan and Tom-Tom, has signed on as a minor sponsor, but not the title sponsor.

In that case, I'd say that ship has already sailed.

It would, however make sense for some team to announce prior to the TdF so they can display their name on the team kit like Disco did back in '04.

Herbalife. They're already sponsoring cycling events and they want a more global presence (ie LA Galaxy and Beckham).

Funding

When they were here training in Solvang in January, I was told by a team manager they were funded to the tune of $18.5 million. Ca-ching! That's serious cash for cycling. I can see why Johan and company want to keep notching the wins and stage victories early in the season. Whoever steps up to the plate will have some pretty "deep pockets." The guys are used to nothing but the best of everything from clothing to places to sleep each night and everything in between.

With the way Disco is riding it will be someone that can sink a lot of cash into supporting the team. It will not be Jittery Joes (no disrespect for JJ, they rode well in TdG), more like Starbucks. I'm not saying SB is sponsoring Disco, but they would have the cash. It is in no way too early for this talk because I imagine the prospective sponors are jostling for position. If your company will benefit from plastering it's name on a Pro Tour team, this is THE one.

MIO, Magellan & Tom Tom are all way too minor to woo, let alone support Discovery. On the other hand, Garmin's an up and coming powerhouse with a bottom line has been doing very well the past two years (Check their chart & sales stats!) and they, from all the touting of the Edge 305 and other athletic-oriented devices might be in the market for a major sponsorship. They're releasing a few new & way advanced GPS units in the next two quarters too from the financial reports. Oh! Jim Cramer of Mad Money fame loves Garmin too. Yeah, he's insane, but also insanely rich from wise investments.

Richard Branson and his "Virgin" companies have been rumored. If an American company someone like General Motors who has major factory and country commitments in Korea, Europe, China Australia and other countries to receive the full global impact. International telecom, computer or tech company. Could Trek afford it? How much is the title sponsor financial commitment, has anyone heard?

Should be an American company and it better not be Walmart.

Team kit with "Virgin" in big red letters on the front. That'll sell well to the OCPs.

Oof.
