Bike Shorts
I know this has probably been asked 1000 times but again the search thing doesn't seem to be working for me. In any case after doing a 30+ ride without bike shorts I am getting the idea that maybe I should invest in a pair or two. looking at performance bike there are some cheap pairs for 24 or even 16 dollars.

These look good but they are cheap..i don't want to buy a pair only to find out they are so crappy that its not even worth the money. Also I wear a 32-34 waist..thats a medium in bike shorts right?

You get what you pay for. Performance makes pretty decent budgetwear, but at that price don't expect much. The only harm if you aren't even wearing bike shorts now and getting cheap shorts is as you mentioned just paying a little more in the long run. Any bike short will be an upgrade from what you are doing now. If you wanted to save some money on clothes then get Performance jerseys and get some nicer shorts. I've got some Specialized BG Comp shorts and PI UltraSensor Shorts, both of which rock.
Also note: many people recommend steering clear of gel shorts because of durability and pressure point issues.
IMO you shouldn't skimp on the contact points. Having good shorts, gloves, saddle, shoes, etc are all very important to your comfort on the bike.
Yes, you'd need a medium.

I agree about avoiding gel, I have heard that they don't last (no personal experience).
I have heard good things about Performance Century shorts, but I haven't tried them yet. I also would probably only use them for shorter rides (under 2 hr).

Because you guys say its so worth it i think i am gonna go for these..

I have three or four pairs of Supergo ( Performance previous name) shorts I bought 3-4 years ago. Still use them for training every week. My favorite pair is the oldest pair. If you are riding for an hour or two they are fine. If I am going four hours its the Garneaus or Castellis. Of course four pairs of supergo=$80, one pair Castelli = $150. You get what you pay for but you can also buy what you need.

The gel bibs are nice but theyre made cheap. I have to assume the shorts are the same. I have 3 pair of the gel bibs and everyone one, the pad is coming unsewed from the shorts.
Ive been wearing nothing but the Izumi Microsensor bibs this year and they have been great. Theyre more money but like someone else said, you get what you pay for.

You can spend $30-$40 and then be replacing them in 2 months or spend $69 and wear them for awhile. The Performance gel shorts just arent that great from a longevity standpoint. The gel pad is pretty comfortable tho.

Personally, if I was looking to spend only $30 or $40 I would wait longer for a tad more cash or for velowear.com to have a sale on their bibs. I picked up a pair last year for $45.
Velowear.com has decent quality shorts and bibs that are perfect for getting a collection started. Unfortunately, it will not stop there. Like me you will start looking a descente aero x bibs and your eyes will wander to assos. Once you realize bike shorts really are that wonderful the addiction will take a life of its own.

If you're just starting and wanted to eventually try/get some bibs later on, I'd also suggest you get the bibs right away. I wear the shorts at first, and once I went with the bibs route I use my shorts much less often.
Also, do remember to check for sales/closeout/coupon deals. My PI ultrasensor bibs costed me $40 otd during Perf in-store closeouts. Not that I've seen them on sale at that price again, but I've seen other deals. There're also the SierraTradingPost Giodana & DeMarchi's. They are higher than your $40 limit by $10-$20, but I think they're worth it. As for Performance brand, I've had good luck with their Ultra bibs. They seem more comfortable to me than my PI ultrasensor, and comparable to my PI microsensor, though the fabric doesn't feel as nice.
For sizing, I find the N/A sizing to be fairly consistent, but the euro ones are a tighter fit. Do check their sizing charts.

Buying shorts on the web is tough as sizing is not consistent between brands. I'm 5-6, 140lb and tried a pair of Giordana bib shorts in large and though the waist was fine the bib part was too short for me. I tried a pair of performance elite in the store and mediums were way too tight for me in the leg. Pearl Izumi and Canari in medium fit me fine.
Cheaper shorts are only ok if you don't wear them much. After a few rides and washings the chamois loses its cushioning and stitching starts coming apart.
Check out ebay and qbike for deals.

If you were one size bigger, I'd send you all my shorts. I have no use for them since I went to bibs. Only time Ive worn shorts is on the trainer.

I've never tried either, so can't help you out. I see Zoot clothing in a lot of tri stores. Performance and STP sells them too, so you can use them for price comparison.
Just remember to check the sizing chart!
BTW, if your price range is at the $50 level, STP has the Giodana silverline which seems to be pretty good. If their coupon hasn't expired and/or you can find their free shipping code, then it'll be $50 otd.
