Yes, there is such thing. It's called Eastwood, but it's officially Louisville. It's about 14 miles out of downtown.

No, I can't say I've done a 'professional tour' of Monte Carlo, and I'm sure it's beautiful, but you won't see anything like this anywhere else, it's definitely unique, and I'm looking forward to heading back. A person doen't always have to travel half way around the world to have a good time, what's on the other side of the world to you, is someone elses back yard. ;)

Routeslip isn't saving routes at this time, so here's a screen shot of Black Mountain
from the south. Not quite Alp D'Huez, but not far off either:

[QUOTE=John Wilke]The roads were perfectly smooth, but the climbs were STEEP!
I'd bring a triple chainring for sure. I'll have to keep my eye out for any organized
rides around there (Bloomington, IN or anywhere in KY). That will give me something
to train for!

The Louisville Bicycle Club has a great ride in September (used to be the weekend after Labor Day), The Old Kentucky Home ride. Its a two day event with great support. On Saturday it has 3 routes from Louisville to Bardstown, 50/70/100 miles and 50 mile return on Sunday. The 100 miler has tough multiple hill section, Pottershop Hill, at about mile 90.

Nice John, thanks!

FYI, those are called the suburbs. If you looked around you would have seen the McMansions, golf courses and horse clubs/stables. It's one of the richest parts of town. You just can't see most of it from the main roads (on purpose). Unless, of course, you were from east into Jefferson County, you shold have passed a bunch of malls.

I've flown on a 50 seat executive jet between Montreal and New Jersey, and let me
tell you, the mountains, trees, rocks, dirt roads is never ending. And then, from one
moment to the next, it's mega-city all the way, baby.

Nothing in between. Nothing like Italy, Spain or France, where hundreds of small
towns around the country, connect the bigger cities, with fine, winding roads,
populated with all sorts of small shops and such. In the USA, there's a Walmart,
a CostCo, K-Mart and the 7-11 with nothing in between, except Wendy's and Mickey
Dees.

It may not have been Eastwood, that's where my brother works for the Department, but he's 7 miles or so out, by a lot of ranch's, horse farms, and some small town that doesn't even have a fast food place (not that that's bad).
Trust me, I know rural when I see it, and run-down houses with brand new satellite dishes in the front yard is rural.

P.S: I'm goign to be down there again maybe this summer, but it's a long shot, I'm positive I'm going in September, you wanna ride?

My sister, near Adolphus KY, gets one TV station and sometimes the cellphone works ... out by the mailbox.

I would think this is the first impulse from a lot of hill climbers here. I've never seen anything that was paved and yet still not climbable.

As a younger lighter rider, I'd take my bike up a 1.1 mile hill that in some spots runners would occasionally use their hands to clamber up. If you're not stressed about falling over backward and having the back tire slip out from under you, then it's not steep.

Heh! It's one thing if the hill is 100 feet long, but this mother would hurt!

:p

I bet the guys putting that tower up were cursing a bit, eh?

I hope you didn't mean this to be as arrogant as it sounds...
