Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's good stuff, DrP. I reapply usually every 100 miles or so and wipe the chain off before each ride. I swear my drive train is quieter than anyone I ride with and my chains last twice as long as they used to.

DP, great! I like how easy it is to clean and re-apply. Not sticky and full of gunk like some others I've used.

That depends on which lubricant you purchase.

Oh, so the air in the tires is obvious, but not lube on the chain....

Dry wax type lubricants need reapplication every 100 miles or so or every time you ride it in the rain.
Oil based lubricants can go longer but depends on how dirty your chain gets.

Finally someone else who likes ATB. A couple of people in my club use it, and the LBS swears by it, but I don't encounter it much, and not at all outside California. Good stuff, doesn't get dirty, and doesn't cost much.

Okay, so I just bought T-9 Boeshield today, put it on the bike, let it dry for an hour and then rode it for 14 miles... Verdict: The best stuff I have tried so far. The chain is whisper quiet, clean, and dry. My chain has never been more happy!!

The stuff I tried ranked from best to worst

T-9 Boeshield
Krytech Dry Wax
Finish Line Teflon based lube
Three in One oil
Motor oil with solvents(dead last!!!)

Blood - that's what hard core riders use. Just run the chain across a good area of road rash and viola!

It's a great lube but it doesn't last very long. I find that I have to bleed on the chain every few minutes. However, my blood will start to clot and I have to cut myself again. What do you recommend that I do? Can I use someone elses blood?

Riding with a nosebleed solves that problem.

I have used Tri-Flow and T-9 along with some homebrew stuff, using gear oil and naptha mixed. My favorite on a newly cleaned chain is Maxima Chain Wax. It is available at any Honda motorcycle dealer and most Harley dealers. once the carrier evaporates off it leaves a film much like the original lubricant supplied by the OEM. It doesn't fling and does not attract much dirt. I still use T-9 between cleanings if I need a quick relube.

One thing is to make sure you wipe off any excess that gets on the outside of the chain, this will help prevent getting dirt all over the outside of the links.

I mix 90W synthetic gear oil, Phil Wood synthetic grease and mineral spirits. Works great for me. For $20 or so I probably have a lifetime supply.
