Rides around Lost Pines (Austin) Texas?
I'm going to be in Lost Pines for a conference in mid-May and was thinking about taking my bike for some one- to two-hour morning rides. I won't have a car, so are there any rides around the Lost Pines area? This town is about 13 miles East of Austin/Bergstrom airport on Highway 71.
Routes w/ good hils would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

The Armadillo Ride starts about 50 miles from Lost Pines. If you are staying at the park, there are tons of places to ride around there. If you are staying at the Hyatt Resort, that is a tougher deal, since it is right on Hwy 71. Hwy 71 is a major 4 lane divided highway with no shoulder for a good part of it and tons of traffic. There is no way to get anywhere without going on 71 for a few miles.
The hilly rides are all on the west side of Austin. You will be east of town. So the answer to your question is, without a great deal of bravery or a car, there aren't really any great places to ride. There are some country roads around there that probably won't have much traffic, but they won't have a lot of hills either. Of course, since you are from Florida, that is a relative thing.

You should definitely get a ride in on Park Road 1 between Bastrop and Buescher State Parks (as seen in marengo's link), even if you have to take a shuttle there.

Nice route, and it appears to go right by the hotel.
35 miles would be about right for an a.m. workout.
Thanks!
