Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Favorite thing to do on a bike?

Just for fun, let's compare. What's your favorite thing to do on a bike:
- Climb?
- Cruise?
- Hammering on flat roads?
- Sprinting?
- Recovery rides?
- Descending?
- Other?

For me it's a toss-up between all-out sprinting and long sustained climbs. I really love the burn you get in your quads as you're chugging up an incline, and I love it even more when you're greeted at the top by great views, a testosterone-pumping descent, and the option to do it all over again.

Long, fast, twisting descents.

All of the above, in random sequence, except maybe a good wind up sprint near the end.

I prefer to Cruise when out on the bike. Riding is not training for me, it's a recreational activity. I'm not saying it doesn't help improve my fitness, it's just a fun way to do it.

I love climbing, but I also just love riding for riding as it helps clear my head and heart of things that would otherwise bring me down.

Impromptu all-out races with my riding partner are also quite fun, especially when there is a long grade or hill ahead.

I like to think of Jan, then my Guads get all warm and fuzzy, and sometimes they even get wet and sticky.

Yes, thoughts of Jan definitely warm the guads for mashing.

I like to drope the hammer.

No really I love to do what I call jumps on flats where I accelerate like mad and then settle to a high pace for a bit and then slow down. They're a blast for me and help in races to cover breaks etc.

I really do love it all, but like Dr. Pete said earlier, there's no cooler feeling than flying down a twisty mountain descent. Taking switchbacks doing 40 = fun stuff. You feel like you're in a fighter jet

Coolest/scariest moment on a bike to date was the Tour de Toona RR. The descent back into town is one of these 40+ super fast descents, and there's a one-lane tunnel that gets REALLY dark as you enter. Nothing like screaming through a dark tunnel at 40+, thinking "wow, I hope the road marshals are doing their job."

(edit) actually, it's a tie. The descent from Mont Ventoux into Malaucene is right up there too. Actually, never mind. Ventoux totally wins.

It's descents like that where you realize that our bikes can handle things that scare the bejeezus out of us, and then some.

Lets see....dropping old ladies on Litespeeds and riding no handed thru busy intersections with my IPOD blasting old Billie Holiday classics tops my list.

Motoring down a flat road with the wind at your back. Or going down a straight, long descent. You're going so fast, you feel almost superhuman.

Long twisty descents, sprinting, and anything flat.

I hate climbing and guys that can climb and make it miserable for people that cant climb in races

I was riding with a buddy back in December, and we were descending down this semi-steep, narrow road doing 40-45ish. It was around 40º out, so I figured we didn't need to worry about ice, and I was leaning pretty hard into turns. Well one turn lead right into a narrow bridge over a creek, and on said bridge my rear wheel kicked out from underneath me and nearly threw me off my bike sideways. I was able to keep the rubber side down, but damn was that sketchy.

Mt. Diablo is a fun descent, except that when I did it the road had crap pavement and I got 2 pinch flats on my front wheel I hope they repaved that.

My fav local descent is the west side of Mohonk. Slightly twisty for most of it, decent gradient, 2 real switchbacks. I'm getting to the point where around those switchbacks it feels like I could scrape my knee against the ground if I wanted to.
