I Just bought a new notebook/laptop that came intalled with Vista. I can not install my polar heart rate monitor soft wear. is there something I am doing wrong?

Any help would be great thanks

Yeah, you're running Vista. Either install XP or call Polar to check there software compatibility.

Many things are broken by Vista. It's a mess.

You will need to contact the vendor of your HRM to see if it has a Vista upgrade / update.

If you have an unused license of XP or Win2k around, I suggest you 'upgrade' your laptop to either of these.

My understanding is that a many software vendors are slow to provide drivers for Vista. Not the most popular OS released by Moneysoft.

I'm having the same problem with my new desktop. I was planning on giving Polar a call tomorrow. What is weird is that the old version of software for my PowerTap installed with absolutely no problems.

I don't use Vista (and don't plan on it on for any computer I have control of) but there is a compatibility layer for XP programs. I haven't tried it so I don't know how well it works, but give it a shot.

Have running the installation package as an administrator? I have been using Vista since December and have found that some installs must be ran as administrator.

Right click the .exe and select run as administrator.

This is for a driver (can't connect to HRM) or app software? I'm having driver issues with my Suunto as well. Looks like the training computer manufacturers are pretty slow in coming up with drivers; especially considering that for these HRM's, all they're doing is to transfer the data from the bike computer to the PC.

I had been using Vista for over a year now, and I know my way around pretty well. (if you wonder how when it was released only a few months ago, well, I was one of the people who helped Microsoft get rid of all the problems....trust me, it was REALLY problematic then). I would suggest that you rightclick on the icon to the program. Click properties, and then click compatibility. Check the box for XP SP2. Apply and then see if your program or installer works. Most likely if you ware installing something, the problem is that you need to run in administrater mode. Vista, by default, runs under reduced power, so that nothing you do not intend to have on your computer would not run. Think of it as running XP Limited with the ability to say, "Hey, I own this machine, so let me run it", and it will let you run it. If you need more help, just contact me.

Or just wait for awhile. Vista really does break many things -- that is why standard practice at most businesses is to downgrade to XP at this time (OK, the fact that the hardware requirements for Vista are so high doesn't help, but still it's mainly because too much critical business software doesn't run). I expect that will be the standard practice for some time.

There is one other option -- you could emulate XP using Parallels. The Vista support for Parallels is brand new, but it does a rather excellent job of emulating other OSes. That way, you can have Vista and XP at the same time.

Vista is definitely a headache till you get everything in place. I upgraded from XP because of some registry issues and if I knew of all the additional driver problems I was going to run into I would have reinstalled XP. It runs flawlessly now though.

Vista is the reason why I switched to Ubuntu. It's such an easier, safer, and more user friendly OS.

You should try 7.04. It definitely is a breakthrough for laptops. Better wireless, graphics, and distro all together.

I just went in through "my computer" and to my F drive and ran set up from there. It installed with no problems at all. I just had to give it permission.

There is a lot of ignorance and hype about Vista. To put it succinctly, you are wrong.

I have been using Vista for over a month, and while certain aspects of it take getting used to, it's a much better system than XP, and faster at that. Currently most of the issues people are having boil down to third party software / driver support which is no fault of "Vista" per-se but rather third party developers.

The improved security, performance and user interface features make Vista a nice upgrade from XP although certainly not necessary. But the move from Win98 to XP was not necessary either.

Will Ubuntu or Kubuntu install all right on my RAID 0 (fake RAID) array? I'm using a standard Adaptec 12XX adapter.

There are certain tutorials on how to install RAID-0 with dmraid during the Ubuntu Live CD install process. You basically us Gparted to partition both drives for raid after installing dmraid. Haven't tried it because I didn't see a need to run my raid array on Linux since I'm not gaming anymore.

I have no need either. It's that I have two SATA II drives in the array. If I were to remove the array / adapter, I'd have to replace the drives or get another adapter because this mainboard only supports IDE. I got the array to test where my bottleneck was with XP. It was the drive. My throughput is now ok limited by the rather dated AMD CPU.

I may try one of those tutorials. One more thing - I've moved to Office 2007 for work. Is there a file format xlator you know of which can see the new MSFT file format of XML/ZIP so I can use my docs in OO?
