Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road Ride Report

So my first season on the bike last year left me unsatisfied- I'd completed a couple of centuries, and want to race now. So before racing, someone tells me I need to get used to riding in a group.

So last night I go out near my home town here in Virginia to ride with this group that rides every Tuesday and Thursday. A nice guy in the group welcomes me to the ride, and says, "on this first climb you'll see the fast group separate from the slow group- I don't know which one you'll want to stick with- do you know the route?"

I say that I do, and that I'll probably stick with the slow group. As promised, I get dropped hard core by the fast group, and the slow group (two people) catch up to me at the top of the next climb. We end up drafting off one another and catch one more straggler and the four of us ride another 18 miles...

at a 20mph pace.

Now call me a noob, but isn't 20mph a little fast for a "slow" group? Apparently the fast group tries to go at a "race" pace, and is led by some Cat 4 guys. I struggled (but managed) to keep up with the pace of the slow group, but I'm exhausted today (after about 22 miles total). I don't know if I'll ever be up to the fast group's pace...

This is what training is all about, I suppose.

Keep riding and training. There are probably Cat 5's in that fast group. You'll keep up with them soon.
