Advise on this used Schwinn Super Sport please ....pic inside

Hello all,

I am going to look at this Schwinn Super Sport that is claimed to be bought in 2006 new for $550 at a LBS and never ridden. The asking price is $250 and is around my budget. I canno't find the bike on the Schwinn website and am wondering if it is one of those sold in the likes of Walmart.

I plan to use the bike for random charity rides (Max 50 miles) and to bike to work sometimes (15 miles one way) I am around 115 lbs and 5'6"

Please let me know your thoughts, suggestions - go for it or keep looking? Thanks

I know it is not taken on the drivetrain side but this is all I got ...

If the size is appropriate, I would say DO IT.

1) If its just the base super sport, the MSRP would appear to have been $399.00, not $550.
2) All the pics of supersports I've seen, and the catalog show it with flat bars, and adifferent stem. I'm guessing maybe it's actually an older model than 2006 (possibly NOS if he did buy it in 2006).

Something doesn't quite add up. For $250, you can get a nicer, albeit older, bike used. If its in good shape, it wouldn't be a terrible buy at $250, but I'd try to hold out for$200.

I have a friend that rode doubles on a Schwinn Super Sport like that. He's since upgraded, but it is a decent (if unremarkable) bike for that price, especially for what you plan to use it for.

Just make sure it fits and is in good condition.

The good news is, this doesn't seem to be the Walmart version. The Walmart version is called the Schwinn Varsity and is on sale for under $200: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...e=cii_13736960

The bad news is, the Walmart Schwinn has a kickstand, as does the one you've pictured. Not anything against kickstands, but they are pretty unusual to find on a road bike. However, for all I know, perhaps ALL Schwinns come with kickstands.

The worse news is, the Walmart version comes with toe clips, while the one you've pictured has platforms (would seem to be a step down, but again maybe the seller who never rode it, removed them).

Good luck with whatever you decide.

That bike is probably a 2005 model (there were no models in 2006 that color according to Xrisnothing's link.) I'm guessing it was purchased in 2006 at a discount and it's probably the GS. I can't see any 2005 catalogs on the site, but if you could find one you'd know for sure.

It is a 2001 Schwinn Super Sport which did have a $550 MSRP in 2001. I bought a NOS one a couple of years ago at a bike shop for $100 (which was a good deal) and it is the bike that got me back into Road Cycling. It is now my son's bike and it is basically like any other Opening Price bike. Sora Shifters and Deraillers with Tektro Brakes, the front Alex wheel is the only thing that's needed to be replaced in three years. The kick stand must have been added by the previous owner.

After about 2003 the Super Sport name moved to flat bar roadbikes and the basic frame shape and spec of the super sport series became the fastback series. In 2001 there was a complete line of super sports which ranged from the $550 model up to about $2000.
