Single day rides in Italy?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Single day rides in Italy?

So sometime this summer I think I'm going to Italy for a family vaca (rome florence venice maybe? not really sure) Anyway, we're goign through a program that's like half a day tour then half a day free. Is there any easy way of getting (renting) a decent bike out there for a little while and are there are good rides around there?

I bought "Italy by Bike" by the Touring Club of Italy and most of the rides seem to be loops in the 40km range. Seems reasonable for an afternoon ride depending on your interest.

edit: I havnt had a chance to try any of their routes so I cant vouch for their quality.

I'll be taking a ride up la Madonna del Ghisallo in a month - from Como to Bellagio, up the mountain & back to Como again is (I think) around 80 miles. http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullstory&id=2642

Florence by Bike, is a full service bike shop, they rent nice road bikes (Bianchi) for 35 Euro a day. Lots of cool stuff and speak very good English. Just a few blocks from the main train station.
