iron horse road bike

I just saw a 2004 Iron Horse Triumph 54cm road bike list $400 CDN on craigslist and was wondering if I should get it. I want a entry level bike and think this bike would do. Is it a bit too much or is that about the right price for this used bike?? Yeah and the price is listed in Canadian $$$

Heres pictures of the bike

It's an OK deal but I wouldn't consider it amazing. These Ironhorses run a bit small and a 54 will NOT fit someone who is 6" or taller. I'm 6' and my '04 IH Victory is a 58 and feels smaller than other 58's I've ridden - probably because it is a compact.

The groupset is fine but lower end. What is $400 in US? $350? Might be worth that if it fits.

That said - I do love my Ironhorse.

I believe it's a correct size for a 5'8" to 5'11" at most. The price seems a little high.Iron Horse had somewhat more prestige a number of years back than the past few.Tiagra works well and the past couple of years a Tiagra equipt bike is typically $800 to $1,000,this can vary a hundred each way depend on the brand, steel averaging $100 to $150 more than Aluminum. If the bike is in super shape and bikes that are available are in much worse shape and cost $100 or so less,I'd say the bike here is an OK deal,A good deal if you like it,I'm like that though,if I want to save money I go to the bank,if I want to buy something I like I buy it.I'm quite sure many here will disagree. You might find a better deal, you might not.

according to XE.com conversion is around $361USD
1 USD = 1.10789 CAD

The craigslist ad says the brakes are Tiagra, shifters and derailers are Shimano SORA...these are lower end?? which are the mid or high end ones?? I'm still new to road bikes and don't know much yet.
Also he said that he bought it from another a couple just recently and been using it the past month and say that this bike has less than 300km's on it.

I'm also looking at a 2004 Giant OCR 3 at $500 CDN or $450 USD and wonder if I should get that instead?? Any suggestions??

I have an Ironhorse bike and I like it a lot. You may want to check with bikenashbar, they have an ironhorse road bike with 105 components for $699. The item number is ih-ec6, my catalog says it ranges from 47-61. I couldn't find it on their site though.

Yeah, I saw those too in my sale flyer...very nice speced bike for the price. Hit it with their 10-20% sale coupon and you have a sweet deal on a very nice bike.

wheres bikenashbar?? I live in toronto, canada is it around here?

Matryx 05-03-07 01:03 PM

so are the shimano 105 components top of the line for bike parts?

Mach42 05-03-07 01:33 PM

No, 105 is the middle of the range.

The progression, from lowest to highest end for Shimano is
Sora-Tiagra-105-Ultegra-DuraAce

Sora is 8 speed, Tiagra is 9 speed, and 105 and above are 10 speed from 2006 onwards. 105 was 9 speed before 2006. You don't want to know how much the high end stuff costs. :)
