Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The cleat thread!

Time to show off your cleats!

Here's the goal: Have a cleat that is small enough to not create lots of noise when walking around up at school. I assume that I'll need to get some MTB or "Casual" shoes that have a recessed cleat area. I'm also going to guess that Crank Brothers have the smallest cleat which will give me what I want.

I am really liking the Bebops though, and I think I'm going to get those atleast for real rides, where I'll also have a dedicated pair of real road shoes. How big are the Bebop cleats? Can I accomplish what I want with just the Bebops and then 2 pairs of shoes (and of course, a second set of Bebop cleats)? Or is what I want going to require either that I get 2 pairs of pedals (CBs / Bebop) and 2 pairs of shoes (MTB or Casual and Road), OR that I just carry a pair of tennis shoes and change out of the cycling shoes when I get to campus?

So, here comes the part where you get to show off your shoes/cleats:

1. What cleat/shoe combo you have that you consider "quiet"
2. What the bebop cleat looks like on ANY shoe, maybe the dimensions of it, if you wouldn't mind.
3. What the eggbeater (crank brothers) cleat looks like on any shoe (would like to see it on a MTB/Casual shoe)
4. Any other reccomendation to satisfy what I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance

For recessed cleats I think you can't really go wrong with Speedplay Frogs. I used it for commuting for a couple of years and I could walk freely on those shoes with minimal noise. You will likely still get some noise from any cleat though as they will still make contact with concrete. My experience is that no one really noticed when walking around with those shoes on campus.

Edit: as for shoes, I used Specialized BG mountain shoes. No idea what the model was though.

No problems with my crank bros. egg beaters. Occasionally if I happen to step directly onto a pebble that gets right into the cleat cavity it'll kind of crunch. But it's very rare. I use a Specialized MTB shoe with 'em. Great setup for a commuter bike.

i use eggbeaters and their regular cleat on mtb shoes with no problems, on my road shoes i use the quattro cleat, which is very good for walking and makes no noise.
