Can one still find a great alu bike with good specs ?
 

I am looking in the thousand dollar range for a reliable aluminum frame with
carbon fork
105 components
A double crankset

I can't seem to find this....
Cannondale's are too expensives
Giants are cool but nothing in my price range with a double crankset...
Trek's relaxed models look neat, but again nothing with a double...

I am kind of staying away from the "bargain" brands such as Motobecane, Scatante, Tirreno, since I already got burned once...:mad:

Any suggestions?

you can get a Trek 1500 with a double crank, all 105 drivetrain, carbon fork...i love mine.

People have mentioned good deals on LeMond Tourmalet, especially previous-year models. I think MSRP is around $1200 for the double, so you might be able to find a deal that's close to your price range.

I picked up a Scott Speedster S30 for AU$1,800 a couple months back. Alu frame, carbon fork & seatpost, full 105 except for the crank & BB (Truvativ Elita) and Hubs (I forget which). Really nice bike, 8.9 kg without pedals. Only complaint is that the frame may be a little too stiff. With the tires pumped up to 100+ psi you can feel every feature of the road surface :rolleyes:

Overall, great bike for the money.

Felt bikes are very nice, and one would be worth your money.

Mine was 125 for the frameset. Less than 500 total build as a TT rig. Thinking of going back w/ campy ergo now.

I could get a $400 Giatn alu frame, but I think that getting quality components might make it pretty expensive, certainly over $1,000...

Yeah, I don't know, I got a bike from performance and it turned out to be a lemon.... I am now a little wary of relatively unknown brands selling bikes with great specs....

my cousin races a Felt F55. he talked me into a Felt as well. i was going to get an 07 F55 (full DA except cranks) because he could get me a deal but that fell through and i found an 06 F65 (full ultegra except cranks) for $1025. i could not be happier.

I bought a Specialized Allez Elite with the 105 group in Feb of '06. It was a triple but I wanted a double. So they swapped out a double from another Allez with my triple... and baaammm... I now have a double!! :) And they didn't charge me for anything, as I'd hoped since I was dropping a $G+ on a bike plus shoes and some accessories!

So find the bike you like and see if they'll just swap out your cranks (and anything else that may be needed for a double. But I know my stuff didn't require anything other than the crank to be changed out. If they really want your sale and have good customer service they'll do it.

I would buy a bicycle from BD ten times over before I bought anything from Performance/Nashbar. FYI, in being a member of BF, you have a very direct contact with the owner of BD, and if you have problems...

LeMond makes a Reno double in that range.
You'd have to live with a Tiagra FD and brifters but it has a 105 RD

Yeah, if you follow a link to the Fuji site, the MSRPs are hidden, but if you go in through their homepage the MSRPs are there. The base-level Roubaix is $1240. Kinda high for a mostly-Tiagra bike (105 RD, FSA Gossamer crank). More to what the OP wanted (spec-wise, not price-wise) is the Roubaix Pro, MSRP $1500, which is mostly 105 with Ultegra RD and FSA Gossamer crank.

That said, I just took delivery of a Roubaix LTD, and it kills. I love it. I'd definitely recommend Fuji as a brand.

Not if you can find a LBS that will work with you a bit. My LBS has a couple models that are $950 to $1200.

Well the LBS in my area that carries Cannondale is a den of sharks.... Guy tried to sell me an alu frame for $1,000 --enough said.
