any advice? - schwinn 10-speed for $95

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

any advice? - schwinn 10-speed for $95

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to upgrade to a real road bike (from my girl's Huffy mountain bike). I'm definitely on a budget.

I found this listing on craigslist. It's a men's Schwinn for $95.

The post says that it's ready to ride and the tires are decent. But you can tell that it's got some rust and has been well used. (there are more pictures on the actual posting)

Do you guys think this is a good deal? If not, what would be a fair offer?

As for fit, I'm 6'3", and my inseam is 91cm. According to this page, that means I need a 59cm bike. The posting claims this one is 65cm, but I'm not sure what that is measuring. I can have the seller measure it again. Should that be from the pedal shaft to top of the frame tube?

I'll definitely do a test ride before buying. But the bike is over an hour away, so I don't want to drive over there, if it's clearly not going to work for me.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Andrew

If that's a Superior model, it's actually a decent bike, and presuming all is in working order, $95.00 sounds quite reasonable. I would be a bit concerned about the size. The measurement is made along the length of the tube where the seat fits in. The measurement is taken from the center of the crank, to either the top of the seat tube, or to the middle of where the seat tube and the top tube meet.

I suspect that the frame will be a little too large for you, but the beauty of Craig's list is that you get to see it, stand over it, and take it for a short spin before you buy it. If it doesn't fit, I'd advise you to wait - check yard sales, keep looking at Craig's list, let friends know what you're looking for, and maybe even check eBay. Before long, you'll have what you're looking for.

Hi USAZorro,

It's a Superior model. One of the posting's pictures shows that. It looks like I'm set there.

I asked the seller about the size - it sounded like 65cm might've been an estimate, so I'm checking for sure. I'll definitely keep looking.

Thanks,
Andrew
