Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SPD shoes & How to buy things economically

I just bought Windsor Knight from Bikesdirect.com. [It is equipped with Ultegra, carbon fork, etc...] It came with SPD pedals. But I am on a tight budget, so I decided to use them. I have been looking for variety of shoes. And I just could not find the right one for the right price.
I have a few specific questions and I read too much articles already, so short and direct response will be very much appreciated.
1. There are some MTB shoes (e.g. Shimano MT-30, 40, 50 series) that can be used for walking purposes. How are they in terms of performance? They usually get 4/5 ratings, but I have not heard too much about them.
2. With $50 budget, which shoes would be the most valuable? If I was to balance my preference, it would be 60% durability 40% performance. I wish to get them in gray & black color. Please do include which is good a good brand and place to buy.
If my asking price is too low, please explain it to me.
3. How can I buy cycling cloths cheaper? I just want simple jersey in gray. Isn’t there walmart for cyclist? lol. So far I found performacnebike.com preferable.
4. I am planning to buy "Bell Motivator Mag Indoor Bicycle Trainer" [$77.57] and "Bell Venture Bike Helmet" [$37.00] from amazon.com. And I have a pair of short and gloves. Plus, a wedge bag and tool kits. What else do I need?

Keep checking bike nashbar and performance bike daily. They are always having sales on different things, so if you wait a while you can find some pretty decent deals. Might not be the most preferable way of shopping, but so far its been working for me.

In addition to www.nashbar.com and www.performancebike.com , you might want to check www.pricepoint.com . They have inexpensive solid color jerseys that get the job done. Look for the pricepoint classic jersey $20 or $30 for two. Also www.probikekit.com has some items at good prices. Shoes are tough because if you don't know what will fit you well, you will probably need to go to a local shop where you can check the fit. Hope that helps.

I bought the 35 dollar shoes from Pricepoint and they work fine. I had to make some adjustments to them but they're dandy. Pricepoint.com is good for that stuff. I bought their seatpack for 8 dollars and a multitool for 20 dollars. The seat pack is really good for the price and I recommend it. Also, you should look into getting the Road morph pump.

You could get a regular bike helmet. I use a schwinn bike helmet that I bought from walmart a few years ago and it fits fine. It will hopefully hold up if I ever need it to (knock on wood I won't be in that situation).

Do you need help putting together a list of things that you need to buy?

Congrats on the Knight, I bought a bike from a bd associated seller on ebay and it's been wonderful so far. I'm actually really happy with it.

Enjoy the bike. Welcome to road riding :-)

The big advantage of buying shoes from a real bike shop is that you can try them on before you buy and thus be sure that they will fit you. If you're cheap, try trolling EBay. There are lots of "worn once" shoes for sale there, mostly sold by people who bought the wrong size from some internet dealer. Except maybe for popular brands like Sidi, these will usually sell for well under half price.
