Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Budget Wheelset Advice (M28 A2 or XR1)

I'm looking at a new wheelset to finally rid myself of the (on this forum) odious Shimano WH-R550 wheels. I have a team deal that I have access to whereby I can get Neuvation M28 Aero 2s for $150 or I can get the Xero XR-1 wheelset.

I am 145lbs and I ride on pretty good roads, so I don't need wheels build like a tank. My main objective is to get rid of the Shimano wheels, but I'd also like to drop some weight on the bike. The Neuvations are quoted at 1740g, while the Xeros are at 1540g, so the winner there is obvious. The Xeros are also slightly deeper section at 30mm, rather than 27mm, but the Neuvations also have bladed spokes, not that any of that makes any real difference, aside from asthetics. What I'm looking for are opinions on these wheels and issues that others have had with them.

I missed the boat on the Reynolds Alta Race flurry a few months ago, but thats ok, because I'd rather have black wheels, anyway.

Opinions?

No experience with the Xeros, but I recently replaced Shimano 550's with the Neuvation M28 Aero 2's. Honestly, in terms of how they ride, I don't notice much difference. However, I have put a ton of miles over tough roads on my bike, and I'm kind of heavy (190 lbs), and the Neuvations are staying true where the Shimanos wouldn't. After a month, I've put about 600 miles on the Neuvations, and climbed close to 40,000 feet (which also means I've descended a similar amount over some very rough roads). $150 for the Neuvations is a great deal.

However, in your case what's wrong with the Shimanos? In my case they wouldn't stay true, and made all kinds of creaking noises when I was climbing (I'm training for the Ca. Death Ride, so I'm climbing a lot). But if you don't have a problem with the Shimanos, why spend the money?

"Should I get ****ty factory built wheels A, or ****ty factory built wheels B"

Try to pick up some hand built wheels for the money, though the Nuevation's probably aren't as bad as Xero and Shimano's.

You are aware that the Nuevations are built by hand right?

I just bought a Fulcrum 5 Evolution wheelset for $295 shipped. While I had considered the Neuvations and the Xeros, more than a few people had some bad things to say about each. I found little information on the Fulcrums but everything was positive so I gave it a shot. Just something different and they turned out to be excellent wheels. Their only weakness so far is the tires can be difficult to mount and the freewheel is not exactly silent.

+5 for neuvations. Love my aero 2s. Put 500 miles on them so far and a ms150 on some rough roads. Ride great and still true.

Dad is getting into cycling and those wheels are going onto his bike (he's 230lbs) and I'm getting a new set of R28 aero 3s or SL3s.

I have the xero's and have put a couple thousand miles on them. I am very happy with them. I have noticed a very small amount of flex, but I also weigh 180, so you might not have this problem. Good luck with your decision.
