Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cassette Rattle

Today i noticed that my cassette was making a noise which led me to believe it was loose. When i would hit small bumps it made that sound we are all familiar with - loose metal hitting other metal. When i got home i gave it a inspection without taking the wheel off and i had some "jiggle" play with it. not too severe but enough to warrant a trip to the LBS. Can anyone give me a diagnosis? Thanks much.

C.

The lockring might be loose. It isn't a good idea to ride like that because you might jam the chain in between two cogs.

I'll guess it's a 9 speed shimano. You will need one of the thin metal spacers that goes on your freewheel before installing your cassette. They come with certain wheelsets and I found out from experience not all bike shops are aware of this part.

Missing shim or spacer if the issue was truely a loose cassette and your lockring was tight.

Is the spacer that goes behind the cassette installed? It's a very small thin spacer that looks like a washer. It's about 1mm thick. If it is not on there then that is the cause of your problems.

I take it from the LBS comments that you don't pull your own cassettes. If that is true then whomever last put your cassette on owes you a spacer.

What P2001 said -I had a wrench at my LBS that left off one on mine and made me think that my water bottle cages had come loose until I had been cleaning my cog and noted the movement. It would seem to be urgent if you ride your bike a lot to get this spacer back on it due to damage to the teeth chain. Plus get your RD readjusted after replacement the chance to have your chain wedge behind your cog and the spokes which may damage more components, causing a lock up of the wheel and flat spotting your tire. The spacer should be ten speed specific. Newer Mavic hubs take their own specific spacer to align correctly. V
