Merlinextraligh is correct. I was attending an Army surgical conference in Honolulu for 3 days. And yes, because I was presenting three talks at the conference, my travel was funded. I'm quite sure my flight was provided by the lowest bidder.
The multitude of fruity drinks I consumed on the beach, however, were not government-funded--those came straight out of my pocket.
All in all it was a good trip. It was only 3 days, which makes the resulting jet lag tons o' fun, but the presentations went well, I got to see some friends from around the Army whom I'd lost touch with, and got to relax for a few days.
So it's all good, Hip, I'm back.

As for the surfing, I didn't. I have a bit of a phobia there ever since a bad experience on Sandy Beach a few years ago. It was not pretty.
I only had the tabu for one night, but when I woke up with a huge tarantula in my bed I passed it on to an unsuspecting, more junior doc.

You Know!? For Kids!
I was at Keokis just a month or so ago. Still have a bit of their coffee beans left. Saving them though. Did not try the Donkey Balls, but I think my wife did. If they compare to the coffee they are great.

Isn't that the truth... Coffee breaks? $150/urn seems to be the going price. But the hotel net service is what gets me the most. Used to be $9.95/24 hours. Now, they seem to have discovered that many people need to access a VPN back home, so what do they do? They institute a two-tiered system- $10/day for no VPN and $12-15/day for VPN. And with all the disclaimers, there's no way you can fight back against the damned network traffic in a large hotel. During my last trip (at a large Chicago hotel) there was so much traffic that I thought I was working on a 110 Baud modem again- thought we left those behind in the 70s. Haven't these people ever heard of switches and subnets? Man.....

Once I got there I came to the realization that 3 days in Hawaii is better than 3 days at some of the other options (this conference rotates and is hosted in DC, Tacoma, El Paso, San Antonio, and Augusta, GA), and even if you're jet-lagged there's immense therapeutic benefit in sitting on a beach with a Mai Tai in your hand and no other real obligations to worry about for a couple days.
I even did some running-- Even I, Mr. Anti-running, gladly went for a 6-miler out of Waikiki along Diamond Head Rd after sessions were over. With that much beauty, even running is tolerable.
So I am happy to say I was wrong-- Beautiful place, reconnecting with old friends, a chance to relax, and some quality beverages all made for a great trip.
Duke's Hawaiian Island Iced Tea FTW!
