Is the Garmin Edge 305 Wireless?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is the Garmin Edge 305 Wireless?

Hello all, I just bought a new road bike and I am wondering if I should use my Sigma 1600 non-wireless computer I had on my old mountain bike or shell out for a new computer.

I really like my old Sigma 1600, as it is very reliable and covers all the data that I consider important (cadence included), however, I am kind of seduced by the idea of a reliable wireless computer (for aesthetic, clean-look reasons). Is the Garmin 305 wireless? reliable? or should I just rely on my old standby Sigma 1600 and save my money? I do have a separate Heart Rate Monitor watch and chest-strap I can use for heart rate measurements, if and when I need to.

I am strictly a recreational rider, non-Lance and non-racer wanabee, if that helps

Thank you.

Regards,

It was getting a bit disconcerting that there were no newly-created Garmin 305 Edge threads today, whew! Yes, it is wireless. One can also obtain heartrate monitor (HRM) capability, which is also wireless. One can rely on GPS positioning for speed calculations or have the "sender" unit affixed for backup transmission.

It's all wireless. Even the wireless part is wireless. Well, I suppose you could substitute wire for zip ties, then none of it would be wireless.

If you don't use the sensors, it's extremely wireless. I mean, beaming all of the way from space to your bike? That's got to be, like, really super wireless!

Garmin engineers are working on ways to make the individual connections within the device completely wireless, too. It will be a marvel of modern electronic engineering when completed.

Garmin units are on sale at REI this week 25% off plus you also get a $50 rebate directly from the Garmin. I am thinking of getting a 305

Does the 305 come with everything needed for cadence and how hard to set it all up? I see 305's with heart rate monitor on Ebay for around $225, is this about the best price for a new unit or does anyone know where I could get the best price?

Just bought mine here:

https://www.compuplus.com/i-Garmin-Ed...61&comboid=836

BTW, does anybody know of a way to get 6 data fields to show properly? Mine jumps from 5 to 7 fields, even though the selection says 6.

I wonder if you are toggling between screens one and two.

I got this funny image in my mind of wires coming down from satellites to Edge units all over the world. How could it not be wireless? I understand that the cadence might not be but geez.

I don't think so. This was when I was setting up the Data Fields. I go up and down on the Data Fields count, and I can see the screen respond accordingly - except when it goes from 5-6-7. Number 6 and 7 showed the exact same screen layout - 1 large on top and 6 small below.

I think some here might be refering to the automatic detection of wheel size. This is why Garmin sells the 305 without the cadence/speed module, because the GPS can itself determine speed.

There are no wires between the satellites and the unit, so yes, it is wireless. The cadence unit is also wireless if you get it and want to use it.

I really like my Edge, but it would be about perfect if they would build in a cumulative odometer. I keep the old computer on just for the odo feature.
