Pulled the trigger on a new saddle...

I've been searching for a comfortable saddle for about a year now. I started off with the stock 130mm Avatar that came on my Specialized Allez. It was really painful to ride on after about 5 miles so I switched it out to a Selle Royal Viper that my bro said was comfy. That too was painful but was ok up to about 15 miles. After talking with one of the local Specialized shops I changed from the Viper to a Specilaized Avatar 155mm. This was pretty close. I could ride about 25 miles before my sit bones were screaming. I kept this saddle on the bike for a while and settled for 25 miles or less rides. This year I decided I wasn't happy with the short trips and I started a saddle search again. I tried a Terry Fly. It wasn't too comfortable to begin with, but, after 25 miles it hurt less than the Avatar. Unfortunately the more I rode the less comfortable it got. I was trying to decide between the Fizik Alliante or the Brooks B17 or Team Pro. After much debate with all the guys at the lbs I went with the Brooks Team Pro. I'm excited to get home, get the saddle mounted and go for a ride. I hope to have solved my saddle problem.

It is one good looking saddle too!

According to the Brooks owners club having one of those will cure everything including world peace.

That stupid thread was my inspiration. :)

I'll keep you posted on how the saddle works out. Hopefully I won't have to pull the trigger again on a new saddle.

Glad to hear you decided to unleash the fury on a Brooks. Let us know how the first ride goes.

So many saddles - have to wonder if it's a setup or sizing issue. Hope not - hope the Brooks is all it's "cracked up" to be.

Here's a quick update. I got to spend about 15 minutes adjusting the saddle tonight. So far so good. Pretty comfy right off the bat, but I'll withhold judgment until I can get at least a good 30 or so mile ride in.

Here are some pics though:

You are over 50, I assume?

Kinda like putting curb feelers on a Porsche, but hey--if it's comfy for you, what the heck?

Gordo789 05-15-07 07:12 PM

dont they have that saddle in black? IMO it wouldve been better looking than the brown one. In any case, grats on the new saddle. From what I understand, those brooks feel better once you break them in so give it some time.

Welcome to the Brooks club. I'm the proud owner of a B-17. Once you go Brooks, you never go back. Nice color too. I got the black one.

The Brooks "look" has grown on me. I love the looks of the Swallow! And, the Swift is growing on me. But, both of those models are at the higher end of the $$ range. I'm riding a Selle An-Atomica currently with about 380 miles thus far and LOVING it. But, I'd like to try a Brooks next. I have 3 road bikes (main one, backup, and a road tandem) so I'll get use out of more than one good saddle.

That is a GOOD looking saddle! It amazing the comfort these kinds of saddles provide. Besides, for those folks who don't care for the Brooks "look" ... you are supposed to be RIDING your bike and sitting on the saddle, doesn't really matter what the looks are. What matters is more saddle time ~~ more miles.

Well when you pulled the trigger, it looks like you missed because there should be at least one bullet hole. At any rate I hope you like your new saddle. But I can't help but think that it would look even nicer if the leather were tooled. You know like this http://www.horsesaddleshop.com/sterl...er-saddle.html and a little silver would add some bling!!!

IAMTB 05-15-07 10:36 PM

Wow there's so much to cover...

One of my lbs' sells them. They used to be oem on cannondales, so check your local cannondale dealer. They are a whopping $25 here.

Hmm a blinged out brooks saddle. Maybe that will add the touch of class I've been looking for.

I have to agree with you here. At first I resisted getting the brooks because I thought it looked funny. But after 1100 painful miles I decided comfort should come before looks. What good is a road bike that you dread riding more than 25 miles?

urodacus 05-15-07 11:31 PM

did the saddle die? or did they save it with a rushed admission to A&E, and some skilful surgery?

glenng 05-16-07 12:19 AM

I pulled the trigger on my neihbors rabid cat. It was a mercy trigger pull. We buried it under the canopy of a big oak tree.
