I had hamstring tendonitis a couple years ago after an unfortunate flirtation with running. It kept me off my bike for a month. It probably would have been less serious, had I not insisted on running a 10K when it was already injured. Sometimes I'm no so smart.

I had peroneal tendonitis that didn't keep me off the bike (neither my doctor nor phsyical therapsit told me to stop). I took longer to warmup, went to physical therapy. Used ultrasound and massage therapy. Lots of stretching. Fixed the udnerlying cause (pelvic misalignment and ITB tightness and cleat position). I'd stop and stretch during a workout if I needed to. I wore proper footwear. Iced and used topical analgesics after workouts and massage/ultrasound.
Sometimes my knee gets a little grumpy in the area you described. Usually, the long groin muscle there is the cause for me because that knee tracks inward toward the top tube. I stretch the hams and quads and the groin really well AFTER riding, or during a long ride if it feels tight. The best one I've found is to do the hamstring stretch where you put your foot up on something (bike seat, SUV/truck bumper, fence, etc.). Then before you step down, turn the foot you're standing on outward and squat down to get the adductors.
Since you've got major problems and bursitis too, call up your doctor. Different parts need different treatment.

well, i've been off the bike now since 5/12. i had a lot of swelling in my right leg, thought it was the celebrex and went back to dr for 800mg ibuprofen 3x/day. got the swelling to go away by laying on the couch friday night by propping the leg up on the back for about 3 hrs.
it doesn't hurt to walk or anything now, but if i go mashing on part of my inner knee, closer to the lower leg, i guess where the tendon attaches to the muscle on my lower leg, there is some pain. not a lot, but it's still there. i've been contemplating trying a real easy ride on tuesday with the understanding that if i feel any kind of pain or discomfort i'm gonna stop.
i also made an appt with a PT for next week to see what they say and if they can offer up stretches or a strengthening program that will help. i'm really hoping this isn't as serious as everyone has made it out to be...but if so, then i'm willing to do what it takes to get it better, i guess, even if it means not riding for a few more weeks...sounds like i may not be doing the TT in Charlotte on 6/6....oh well, there's next year right?

Here's a link that illustrates some good IB stretches. Just back from the Montauk 100 and this cropped up at around mile 40. Rode 35 miles with it, took 2 Advil's at the last rest and rode the last 25 pain free (sort of!) and a lot faster than I probably should have.
This is a good series of stretches. Ice skaters and Inline skaters find a way to stretch the IB out of habit since it really tightens up while skating. Which may be the source of my IB trouble. Or maybe the flat feet?
Hope it helps.

Seems to be a great thing to work on PREVENTING rather than treating. The advice to not agravate it by soldiering on is true, but you can't always just stop in the middle of a ride.

I'm still riding, but let me tell you, rides are so much more difficult when your upper body is practically out of commission. I wouldn't have thought it would make so much difference.

and don't necessarily head straight to the doctor with tendon pain: many of them do not know the best ways to treat it, and many just send you home with "aspirin and rest" which is not going to fix the problem in the long term.
find yourself a good Physiotherapist... someone who specialises in sports injuries would be ideal. they are much better informed, with much more practical solutions to your problem. which may include rest and aspirin, of course.

ok...it's been 6wks. i was off the bike the first 14 days and saw a PT at day 12. on day 14, the PT said that he thought i would be ok for 30min rides a couple of times a week - flat terrain, spinning.
so, give me an inch and i take a freakin' mile i rode that same day for 30min and felt great. rode 40min the next day. on Memorial Day, i did a 30min ride with my group then did another one that day. next day, it was 1.5hrs! then for the next 1.5wks, i rode 1.5hr x2, 2hrs, 1.5hr. i didn't have any pain during any of these rides, but did have a feeling of tightness through the knee.
then i see my dr at 5wks of "supposedly" no riding. he wasn't pleased because his words were: "i really thought this would've been a lot better by now" while he was pressing around my knee. so, i had to tell him that i had been riding some...because i was stupid and impatient, he gave me 4 more weeks and didn't tell me to not do the 30min riding that the PT had prescribed. (i haven't ridden since 6/9). my dr suggested that i get the cortisone shot after 4wks if i'm not any better at that time (after 4wks off & PT).
i'm, so far, listening extremely well this time i haven't been on my bike in two weeks, save for one true 30min ride this past sunday. i'm taking mobic for the inflammation and doing tons of stretching. it's really weird because i seem to have more pain & tendernous in the tendon/bursa now than when i did when i rode for those 2 wks.
i'm signed up to do a ride on the 4th and will just play it by "knee" up to that point. i just can't see how, if i'm gonna get a shot anyways after 4wks, why not go ahead and get it now? it doesn't seem like it's gonna be a lot better in another 2wks...
thoughts & suggestions?

I hate to say I told you so....

Suggestions? Yes... listen to your doctor. As difficult as it may be to bear, if he says 30 min. per week, then you should do 30 min. per week. As I said before... if you aggravate it now, it could turn chronic, and you won't even be able to do those 30 minutes. It's a simple choice, IMO.
