Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

students, how do you function with a bike?

Hello,

I will be going to georgia state university next year, which will be a change... it is right smack in the middle of down town atlanta (anybody who has worked or visited down there has seen the buildings scattered over the city)..

the campus is spread out, over about 15 blocks I would say...

I will be living in dorms on campus, but the dorm is about 7-10 blocks away from the class buildings..

I plan on taking one of my bikes that I really don't care about loosing (raleigh m20 that is to small)... but was curious how you use it.

I will be on the 14th floor in a 4 bedroom apartment with my own room (sounds nice I know, but that is the way all of the students are and we are all paying about 700 a month for it... they don't have normal dorms)...

do you guys take your bikes up with you and leave them in your room? Do your universitys expect you to leave them in like a "bike shed"?

What do you use to secure your bikes outside of class?

marta is the public transport service
"
  • Bicycles are allowed on MARTA trains all hours of the day. MARTA buses all have bike racks mounted on them for easy multi-mode transportation.
"
so that is nice..

thanks!

-never leave a bike outside on a college campus unless you want it to rust or to be stolen (or both).
-outisde of class, i just locked it up. simple. you'll be out in an hour or so anyways, so nobody will really mess with it if it's secure.
-marta is sweetness.

uhh, other than that i don't know what to tell you.

this really isn't a campus like GA tech (enclosed) this is mixed throughout the city

here is what the GSU site says about biking

Cycling

Bicycles are a surprisingly easy way to get around Atlanta. Just look:

* Atlanta has an expanding system of bike paths and bike lanes throughout the city.
* Most downtown areas have wide roads with adequate room for bikes.
* Bike-mounted police patrol the campus area and increase motorists' awareness of bicycle traffic.
* Bike lock-up racks located in well-trafficked areas are available near most classroom buildings.
* Bicycles are allowed on MARTA trains all hours of the day. MARTA buses all have bike racks mounted on them for easy multi-mode transportation.
BTW: I'm taking a "throw away" bike... I'm going to have to ride in the rain, so it is going to rust... I'm just trying to find a way to keep it from getting stolen.

Even though it kind of seems odd at first, i just take my bike into class with me. Sometimes I don't if it's on the second/third floor of a building, but else wise I do.

The bike racks here seem pretty secure for the most part. They're highly visible (well, the ones by the sciences complex) so I doubt anyone will mess around with them. I, however happen to be a member of the undergrad chemistry society, so I just keep my bike in the room which is quite secure with a lock and everything =). Some profs are seen carrying their bikes to their office, so it's all good.

As for the the dorm, I don't think anyone would have objections to you bringing your bike to your room. Afterall, it is your room!

lock rear wheel and frame to rack, then lock front wheel to frame (and rack if possible). convert bike to a fixed gear .

seriously though, you should keep an eye out for places to park your bike that are out of rain/the occasional georgia snow while the weather is nice now. nothing is worse than riding to class already late because of the weather and then having to park your steed unprotected from the elements. for similar reasons (along with above post about theft) i always keep my bike in my room. from what i have experienced VERY FEW dorms have internal bike racks for students to use. i suspect that in atlanta, the cost of keeping a room for bikes might be too high compared to what they could get for rent.

an idea for parking bikes in cities: parking garages. it sounds weird, but when i go downtown (cinci), there is no way i am going to leave my bike locked on the street out of my sight. instead, i take it to a parking garage, enter through the pedestrian entrance, ride up to the last floor before it is open to weather, and lock my bike up there. good for baseball games. you have to make sure that the garage has something to lock to of course, but that isn't too tough to determine.

god luck

hmm. intresting...

So I'll get the NY lock to lock the front wheel to the frame.. but I guess I'll need some sort of chain lock for the frame+back wheel+whatever I'm locking it to?

something like this: https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=6700 ?

i dont think i will be any help sense i go to a small school in Florida in the middle of no where (aka saint Leo) but i lived in the same apartment setup as it sounds like you are going to have (i was on the second floor). definitely keep any bike inside. I had two xmart bikes stolen or completely rotted out in 1 year. if you know your roommates and trust them you can keep your bike in the common room (kitchen/living room) i have a cheep wall hanger that screws to the wall that was less than $10 at the hardware store and it works well, just need a screwdriver (electric works better) and some Spackle at the end of the year when you move out. if you have elevators you should be golden, otherwise your gunna get a good workout regardless of having a bike.

you might see if you can make friends with the janitor on the first floor, you might work out a deal to keep the bike in the janitor closet or something, you never know, besides its great to be able to borrow some of the cleaning supplies like the vacuum every once in a while and god forbid you run out of tp

*edit* my roommates like the bike, it makes a rather manly decoration, goes good with the fishing poles and golf clubs.

When i lived on campus i, we had bike racks under the lobby stairs, i always locked up there and never had a theft. At class i would typically enter though a loading dock door (all my classes were in the basement of that building anyway) and i would lock it to a railing in there. Low-traffic out of the elements area. Now that i live off campus, i just bring my bike into the townhouse with me and call it a day.
