Why do we wear high ankle socks?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Strangely enough, a dog bit me through some socks (so the length doesn't really matter), and one thing the socks helped with was it covered the wound and helped it clot before I completed the ride and cleaned it up.

I like Under Armour's low-cut socks you get in the 4-packs, actually. Comfy, and not $12/pair. Though I do have a couple pairs of low-cut White Sox wicking socks that I picked up at Grandstand, too, to sort of mix it up.

Also, I serialize each pair and mark a left and a right. I do this with all my socks. It's a harmless twitch.

I think you have LA confused with Andy Hampsten, or another 7-11 rider.

Armstrong was a promising amateur, nothing more and nothing less, when STI came out.

Cheers,

Brian
As a nurse, I'm very aware of the complications with circulation and foot problems in diabetics patients. However, I wear the "cycling" socks myself and while they are somewhat tight (for support I assume), they don't constrict blood flow, at least not that I can tell. On the other hand, the DO wick away moisture from my feet while I ride. After a good ride I take off the socks, they are wet, feet are dry. This is very important in foot health too, as moisture buildup over a period of time can cause tissues to become soft and bacteria LOVE warm moist places. Another plus is the way most of the cycling socks are constructed means they don't have seams which can wear on your feet over the period of a ride and cause further skin breakdown. I think the benefits of wearing the cycling socks would outweigh the negatives, especially for one such as yourself concerned with foot care. You might want to look into this and reconsider, maybe get a second opinion.

USPS jerseys were better looking than most pro cycling team jerseys of the time. Lance's victories under Postal sponsership increased the visibility of pro cycling a hundredfold in the US. Unfortunately, the marketing goombas in USPS HQ decided that they would rather sponser NASCAR , the sport (?) of hillbillies, instead of continue with cycling, the sport of the gods.

Back on topic: Wool socks rock, regardless of height, but I do prefer the shorter ones when weather permits.

Those are the gayest socks I've ever seen.

/\/\ What makes a type of sock "gay" as compared to the next? Maybe you can share your preferences on cycling socks and why they perform best. For example, SmartWools are extremely durable, don't retain odors, and are comfortable across an extremely broad range of temperatures because they wick so well.

What an odd thread.

I have no show socks for cycling (Defeet aireators and champion). Merino wool socks for cold weather (cycling is included).
No show champion white socks for regular shorts. 1/4 length white socks for the same thing. Full length champion white socks for jeans. Full length black dress socks for work.
It really iritates me when I ride to work wearing wool socks for cool mornings and forget the no show cycling socks for the warmer ride home without tights.
However, wearing white socks with dress clothes is even more annoying.

We don't.

Except in winter, I wear the low cut "low crew" or whatever they're called, the sox that show off your entire ankle. Why? I dunno, 'cuz the first ones I got happened to be very comfortable so I kept buying them?

Or maybe because I think high ankle socks look dorky?

(I know, I've said it before: cyclists have no business complaining about anybody else's fashion sense.)

Actually, yesterday I thought of a good reason to wear high ankle socks: The morning started out a bit cool, so I had leg warmers on. That tiny gap between my lo-rise socks & the bottom of my leg warmers was freezing for the first 10 miles or so!

My bike socks are the same height as my regular non-dress socks.

I was unaware so many people wore such low socks, that bike socks would be 'high'

I just wear my argyle dress socks. They are synthetic and about the right weight.

Actually, I usually wear no socks or the thinnest short athletic or liner socks I have in the drawer. If they're "too high" for my taste, I just fold them down!

Here we are talking about what length socks to wear.

This is amazing. But I too like the little black UA socks. They are unobtrusive and comfortable.

Because if you fall you won't mess up your ankle on the outside of course with the long ones.
