Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

why are helmet designs getting uglier?

I'm so sick of not being able to find a nice mono-colored road helmet. A few years ago they were all sleek and simple and usually one solid color. Now they all seem to be designed with two or three colors and have alternating color stripes. Bleechhh! Why? I miss my white Giro Eclipse, my yellow Pneumo, my red Limar. The colors are ugly too-- everything is blended with silver stripes. The Bell Ghisallo/ Sweep, all of the Giro helmets are hideous. I've come across a few older models that are being sold on clearance, like the 05/06 models and those seem to be solid colored, but unfortunately there are slim pickings in terms of size. Where did this multi-color/stripe trend come from? Overnight all of the companies apparently decided "Hey, let's jazz up our helmets by blending multiple colors together into stripes." Yuck. Sorry, end of rant.

Looks like they only make white & silver. Is this what you want?

If so, you can get it here for $120, among other places:

I use a silver Bell Alchera. Although it doesn't, from a distance it looks like it only has a single colour.

Try Ebay. I got a fairly basic, but nice one for about $12 . I was trying to avoid the over-styled helmets that are so prevalent now.

I don't think they are getting uglier, I think, we the passing of time and as we get older, we just want to be more low-key. I hear yah. I only like to wear low-key, no logo jerseys.

I'm getting seasick just looking at this...

I was in the market for a new helmet a couple of months ago, and had the same experience as the OP - everywhere I looked, I saw multi-tone striped, spotted, swirled bleh. In the end I found an all-white Giro Eclipse (on super-sale at Performance), and I look good in it
